VERTEBRATES
What is a vertebrate?
• Vertebrates are animals
that have a spinal
column and a skeleton
formed from bones.
• The skeleton holds up
and protects the body.
THE FIVE GROUPS OF
VERTEBRATES
1. FISH
• Fish live in water and
breather through gills.
• Their skin is covered in
scales and they have
fins to swim.
THE FIVE GROUPS OF
VERTEBRATES
2. AMPHIBIANS
• Can live in water or in land.
• Their babies live in water
and breathe through gills.
• The adults breathe
through lungs and through
their skin.
FROG
THE FIVE GROUPS OF
VERTEBRATES
3. REPTILES
• Live on land and some in
water.
• They breath through
lungs.
• Their skin is covered in
scales and some have a
shell.
TORTOISE
SNAKE
THE FIVE GROUPS OF
VERTEBRATES
4. BIRDS
• Live on land and in the
air.
• They breath through
lungs.
• They have feathers and
wings.
EAGLE
HUMMINBIRD
THE FIVE GROUPS OF
VERTEBRATES
5. MAMMALS
• Live on land and some in
water.
• They breath through
lungs.
• Their body is covered in
skin and fur.
• Their babies feed on their
mother´s milk.
BEARS
INVERTEBRATES
What is a invertebrate?
• Animals that do not
have a spinal column or a
skeleton made of bones.
• Some of them are:
– Annelids
– Cnidarians
– Arthropods
– Sponges
– Mollucs
– Echinederms
What is a invertebrate?
• They have a soft body
because they do not
have skeleton.
• Many have a shell to
protect their soft
bodies.
