Social media allows for multi-directional interactions around online content. A social network specifically allows direct interactions between users on topics of mutual interest. People spend a significant amount of time on social media, with over 22% of online time spent on social networks like Facebook, which has over 500 million active users who are connected through on average 130 friends. It is important for parents to be aware of their children's social media use and online activities to keep them safe from potential dangers.

If it’s not happening in your house, don’t assume that it is not occurring next door, or in the school library or on the playground. Create ground rules for participation 1) Start listening and monitoring to what is being said about your child online. 2) Set up and create policies, rules and guidelines for participation in social media. 12. Find Your Teen's Profile The first thing parents should do is find their child's profile. Kids have more than one online profile, so you have to find out how many your child has and where they are. You are entitled to know and the best way to find out is by asking your kids. Tailor the Profile to Fit Needs You need to understand why your child has a profile. Once you know why your child is on the site, you can make sure they're only giving the information they need to. Follow the Four Ps Don't let your child post anything publicly that parents, principals, predators or the police shouldn't see. Everyone is looking. And what you post on the Internet stays there forever. Use Privacy Settings Make sure your children use the most restrictive privacy settings available on the social networking site where they have a personal profile. Do only let your kids have their real-life friends as Internet buddies — the people you know about. Do Online Snooping Snoop on your children. You're allowed to do that. 14. See who is following or “friending” your child and vice-versa. No adult, unless it’s a family member should be in any network that your child is part of. Explain the dark side of social networks to your child, there’s nothing wrong with being scared straight. Periodically evaluate the content they are sharing and consuming. Know what they are searching for Don’t forget or ignore texting and email. Establish usage guidelines for those as well. Never assume they are harmless or easy to manage. If you feel the need to establish time constraints for computer and phone usage, do it. No computers in the bedrooms. You are a parent, not a friend. If you have to shut it down-don’t feel guilty.
