Vision Green 2010 Report
IIT Kharagpur

Organizing Committee President Speaks
“There is a sufficiency in the world for man’s need but not his greed!” a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi.
The current scenario is an exemplar of the above quote with utilities disappearing, water table
deteriorating, climate rapidly changing, yet the demands constantly soaring high. If this continues at such
an alarming rate without being checked then in no time would we see the end of the world. Several
environmental projects have been conceptualized, several attempts made and one such attempt by the
AIESEC IIT Kharagpur team, is Vision Green 2010, a corporate, student and faculty conglomeration to address
these brink circumstances.

The primitive goal of Vision Green was to promote Green Technologies and their sustainability in today‟s
entrepreneurial world. All the events associated with this campaign are directed towards this goal. The
“Learning Networks” workshop conducted by Centre for Environment Education (CEE) saw participation of
over 200 students from IIT Kharagpur not only influencing and inspiring them towards achieving a sustainable
world but also giving them an unforgettable experience.

“Global Village” a trademark AIESEC event showcasing its global facet, international reach and diversity of
the organization. Fusing this with the theme of the proceedings, the foreign interns presented green
initiatives being implemented in their respective countries. The response was wonderful and it is really
great to see the students‟ interest in current global affairs.

“Green Business Summit”, flagship event of the Vision Green Campaign, a unified platform for delegates,
students, faculty and media to interact and share their expertise, knowledge and future plans regarding
environmental protection. The event consisted of lectures and presentation by eminent speakers on
“Environment and Sustainability”, followed by a Panel Discussion moderated by the Director of British
Council, Mrs. Sujata Sen.

Vision Green started off as a small summit but eventually influenced many, urging them to give a serious
thought to an imminent danger being completely neglected. We are looking forward to bigger projects to
create an impact even bigger, where in not only will it be an opportunity to learn but also to implement.

Before closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Deputy Director, Delegates, Faculty,
Foreign Interns and Students for taking this event to the next level. Above all I would like to thank my team,
the Vision Green Organizing Committee for putting in such massive efforts in not only making this event
possible but also a grand success.

                                                                                                 Rohit Jaini
                                                                             Organizing Committee President

Learning Networks
23rd October, 2010

As an attempt to do our bit towards nature, AIESEC IIT KHARAGPUR organized
“Learning Networks” as a part of the launch of its present venture “VISION GREEN
2010”. The workshop based on the theme “Achieving Sustainable Development by
adopting low Carbon Lifestyle” was conducted by Mrs. Reema Banerjee and Mr.
Praveen Bharadwaj from Centre for Environment Education. 107 students selected
on the basis of a preliminary test attended the workshop. Mrs. Banerjee in her
presentation said that the definition of Environment needs to be changed. It should
focus on the word “I, every individual”, without which we cannot achieve
sustainability.

Following the presentations, the participants were asked to come up with ideas to
address the present scenario. The groups of students presented the solutions in their
unique styles. “Education is the key; students must use this to unlock sustainability”.
This was the central idea of the group represented by Mrugank, Siddhartha and Surbhi
who artistically depicted it in their paintings. The second group led by Aritra Mitra
and Vipul Srivastava voiced their concerns in poetry-

“Yagya vagya havan puja karke tum sankat bhaggate ho’

Par naadano tum shrishti pe CO2 ke badal lehrate ho”

This means that by performing yajnas and other rites using fire we try to minimize our
troubles, though in the process we forget that we are blanketing the earth with
carbon dioxide.

Mrs Banerjee the program coordinator was very pleased with the participant‟s
enthusiasm, and hoped that they carry it forward beyond their student life.

Everyone‟s response can be aptly summed up into Sachin Jaiswal, AIESEC IIT
KHARAGPUR‟s President:” Really amazing workshop! Tailor-made for KGPians and very
informative.”

Energy Audit
January - April, 2010

Affirming the general view that today‟s generation
wants a green future and is always looking for
sustainable means; some students of IIT Kharagpur
decided that, in order to start a worldwide
campaign, you need to start at your backdoor. They
noticed that some lights at their institute used to
stay on even when not needed. Could those be
others as well? This got them to the idea of
conducting an Energy Audit of the campus. They
being AIESECers were able to bring in professionals
in the form of trainees from Brazil and Chile.

The auditing process was carried out from January to April, 2010. The team consisted
of 20 students and they worked with the two interns from abroad. Throughout the
auditing process, two professors from the Department of Electrical Engineering guided
and mentored the auditing team. An IIT Kharagpur startup, EcoZen solutions, a
company dealing with energy audits, kept track of the progress of the auditing team
and gave them essential guide in their
                                           quest. The implementation scheme was
drafted based on the findings of the
                                           auditing team.

The success of this audit went a long way
in drawing an action plan to make
IIT Kharagpur an energy efficient campus
thus setting an example for others to
follow. The audit was officially recognized
by IIT Kharagpur, ASHRAE and IEEE. TERI
and SIEMENS also endorsed the project
and gave incentives to the students in the form of internship opportunities.

The final synopsis can be found at http://www.slideshare.net/aieseciitkgp/energy-
audit-synopsis and the report was submitted to The Director of the institute.

Earth Week
22nd – 28th March, 2010

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also
known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually,
asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other
electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action
on climate change.

Recognizing the power of an idea like Earth Hour, AIESEC IIT Kharagpur came up with
“Earth Week” for the week containing the day of Earth Hour in 2010. Earth Week was
an online quiz event along lines of environmental issues hampering the continuity of
the fragile equilibrium very vital to life‟s existence.

The Earth Week took a step in the direction of finding a solution to the growing
environmental problems by helping increasing awareness among the common masses
in the form of a quiz based on environmental themes culminating in the earth hour of
27th of March 2010, during which a complete blackout was observed for an hour from
2030hrs to 2130hrs local time at IIT Kharagpur.

The event was conducted through a Facebook Application taking into consideration
that use of Facebook is very popular in IIT Kharagpur.

Inter-IIT Energy Saving Championship
September-November, 2010

An initiative by Techfest, IIT Bombay, this event came as an opportunity to IIT
Kharagpur. An inter-IIT event was bound to instil fervour in the students of IIT and
AIESEC in IIT Kharagpur took up this chance to spread the message that Techfest tried
to tell. Save Energy.

AIESEC IIT Kharagpur is moderating energy saving in IIT Kharagpur‟s hostels by word-
of-mouth publicity as well as novel initiatives like „Switch OFF‟ while instilling the
habit of saving energy. For more information, check out

Switch OFF
29th September, 2010

From 2030 – 2130, Kharagpur was out on the streets. Most students had switched off
all power consuming devices and had decided to take the leisurely 2.2 (a walk around
the 2.2km long stretch of road that connects all major locations in IIT Kharagpur) with
friends. Why?

Because, AIESEC in IIT Kharagpur organised a campus-wide Switch OFF to create
awareness about the need of the hour. AIESEC IIT Kharagpur conveyed the message
successfully that power saving need to be done on a regular basis and that our future
lies in our hands. All the major halls switched off lights completely and showed their
unity.

The only way to make change happen is to make a stand. Make a stand for nature.

10/10/10 with ‘I am Gurgaon’
10th October, 2010

All around the world, people have gathered
together to stand up against a common goal,
aiming to reduce carbon content by 10%.
Thousands of events, from the large iconic to
small practical actions, across the globe have
marked today as the largest day of positive action against climate change ever. We, a
small bunch of students representing AIESEC IIT Kharagpur, along with I am Gurgaon,
had organized an event of this Global Day of Action in our capital city, New Delhi at
the Aravalli Biodiversity Park.

The following eminent delegates from the
administrative and social fronts had graced the
occasion today morning with their presence.

 Mr R. C. Mishra: IPS, IG police Haryana,
      Environmental Scientist.
 Mr. Rajesh Khullar: IAS, Commissioner
      Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon.
 Mr. Gagan Sharma, Chairman Wizcraft, Apra Group, Kingdom of Dreams
 Mrs Neelima Sharma: Head of Saksham Group, an NGO for underprivileged
      children.
 Mr. Vivek Kamboj: Head of Haryali, an NGO and he is also the grandson of
      legendary freedom fighter Udham Singh.
 Dr. Lokesh Abrol: Leading physician, Environmentalist, managing trustee of
      Gurugram Gaushala.
Not only that, residents of DLF Foundation, representatives from Municipal
Corporation of Gurgaon, Forest Department of the Government of Haryana and
around 50-55 children, of the age 7-15, from Government school run by NGO:
Saksham too attended the event.

The event commenced with the introduction followed by a warm welcome speech by
Dr. Abrol. Mayur Rastogi & Abhimanyu Abrol of AIESEC IIT Kharagpur, the world‟s
largest student run organization, talked about AIESEC, the green initiatives like
Energy Audit of the entire IIT Kharagpur Campus, Inter-IIT Energy Saving
Championship and also about their upcoming event, Vision Green 2010 on 23rd -24th
October, a step towards greening the future.

                                           18

Mr. RC Mishra spoke about the „true meaning‟ of environment and its conservation.
According to him, “Planting a tree is the biggest contribution to the society even
bigger than if we continuously from birth to death keep on donating to needy
people.” He proved it mathematically as well. Dr. Abrol, Mr Gagan Sharma and Mrs.
Neelima Sharma also added to him. Mr. Vivek Khamboj enlightened everyone when
he described the way in which a Peepal tree can be uprooted from some area and re-
planted somewhere else. We need to take care that the roots are not destroyed.
Measures are taken to ensure that enough support and nutrition is provided to the
tree at the new location. The Head of Vaish Samaaj, resident organisation formed by
residents of DLF, spoke about the environment.

After that everyone went to plant saplings.
The officer from Department of Forest
demonstrated the way in which a sapling is
sown in the earth. First the polythene
containing the mud and the roots of the
sapling is torn taking care that the mud
                                       doesn‟t break/become loose. Then the
sapling is firmly sown in the ground and
watered regularly. Kids were divided into
groups of 4 and 1 senior person was
associated with them and each group planted
1-2 saplings. Children were over-joyed and
everyone was energetic in planting the saplings. Finally, after all hard work, snacks
came along. A copy, pencil, rubber and stationary were distributed among the school
children.

This event truly represented all the different sectors of the society, the kids, the
youth and the elders, all coming together for the Noble cause of creating a POSITIVE
IMPACT on our very own Environment. The smile on the kid‟s faces when they planted
their own saplings and impacted Mother Nature and the overall satisfaction that we
gave back a little to our very own Earth, everything together just made it a perfect
ending.

Vision Green 2010 Report

  • 2. IIT Kharagpur Organizing Committee President Speaks “There is a sufficiency in the world for man’s need but not his greed!” a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi. The current scenario is an exemplar of the above quote with utilities disappearing, water table deteriorating, climate rapidly changing, yet the demands constantly soaring high. If this continues at such an alarming rate without being checked then in no time would we see the end of the world. Several environmental projects have been conceptualized, several attempts made and one such attempt by the AIESEC IIT Kharagpur team, is Vision Green 2010, a corporate, student and faculty conglomeration to address these brink circumstances. The primitive goal of Vision Green was to promote Green Technologies and their sustainability in today‟s entrepreneurial world. All the events associated with this campaign are directed towards this goal. The “Learning Networks” workshop conducted by Centre for Environment Education (CEE) saw participation of over 200 students from IIT Kharagpur not only influencing and inspiring them towards achieving a sustainable world but also giving them an unforgettable experience. “Global Village” a trademark AIESEC event showcasing its global facet, international reach and diversity of the organization. Fusing this with the theme of the proceedings, the foreign interns presented green initiatives being implemented in their respective countries. The response was wonderful and it is really great to see the students‟ interest in current global affairs. “Green Business Summit”, flagship event of the Vision Green Campaign, a unified platform for delegates, students, faculty and media to interact and share their expertise, knowledge and future plans regarding environmental protection. The event consisted of lectures and presentation by eminent speakers on “Environment and Sustainability”, followed by a Panel Discussion moderated by the Director of British Council, Mrs. Sujata Sen. Vision Green started off as a small summit but eventually influenced many, urging them to give a serious thought to an imminent danger being completely neglected. We are looking forward to bigger projects to create an impact even bigger, where in not only will it be an opportunity to learn but also to implement. Before closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Deputy Director, Delegates, Faculty, Foreign Interns and Students for taking this event to the next level. Above all I would like to thank my team, the Vision Green Organizing Committee for putting in such massive efforts in not only making this event possible but also a grand success. Rohit Jaini Organizing Committee President Vision Green 2010 1

  • 15. IIT Kharagpur Energy Audit January - April, 2010 Affirming the general view that today‟s generation wants a green future and is always looking for sustainable means; some students of IIT Kharagpur decided that, in order to start a worldwide campaign, you need to start at your backdoor. They noticed that some lights at their institute used to stay on even when not needed. Could those be others as well? This got them to the idea of conducting an Energy Audit of the campus. They being AIESECers were able to bring in professionals in the form of trainees from Brazil and Chile. The auditing process was carried out from January to April, 2010. The team consisted of 20 students and they worked with the two interns from abroad. Throughout the auditing process, two professors from the Department of Electrical Engineering guided and mentored the auditing team. An IIT Kharagpur startup, EcoZen solutions, a company dealing with energy audits, kept track of the progress of the auditing team and gave them essential guide in their quest. The implementation scheme was drafted based on the findings of the auditing team. The success of this audit went a long way in drawing an action plan to make IIT Kharagpur an energy efficient campus thus setting an example for others to follow. The audit was officially recognized by IIT Kharagpur, ASHRAE and IEEE. TERI and SIEMENS also endorsed the project and gave incentives to the students in the form of internship opportunities. The final synopsis can be found at http://www.slideshare.net/aieseciitkgp/energy- audit-synopsis and the report was submitted to The Director of the institute. 14
  • 16. IIT Kharagpur Earth Week 22nd – 28th March, 2010 Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. Recognizing the power of an idea like Earth Hour, AIESEC IIT Kharagpur came up with “Earth Week” for the week containing the day of Earth Hour in 2010. Earth Week was an online quiz event along lines of environmental issues hampering the continuity of the fragile equilibrium very vital to life‟s existence. The Earth Week took a step in the direction of finding a solution to the growing environmental problems by helping increasing awareness among the common masses in the form of a quiz based on environmental themes culminating in the earth hour of 27th of March 2010, during which a complete blackout was observed for an hour from 2030hrs to 2130hrs local time at IIT Kharagpur. The event was conducted through a Facebook Application taking into consideration that use of Facebook is very popular in IIT Kharagpur. (http://apps.facebook.com/earth-week/) 15
  • 17. IIT Kharagpur Inter-IIT Energy Saving Championship September-November, 2010 An initiative by Techfest, IIT Bombay, this event came as an opportunity to IIT Kharagpur. An inter-IIT event was bound to instil fervour in the students of IIT and AIESEC in IIT Kharagpur took up this chance to spread the message that Techfest tried to tell. Save Energy. AIESEC IIT Kharagpur is moderating energy saving in IIT Kharagpur‟s hostels by word- of-mouth publicity as well as novel initiatives like „Switch OFF‟ while instilling the habit of saving energy. For more information, check out http://visiongreen.aieseciitkgp.org/energyGC/ 16
  • 18. IIT Kharagpur Switch OFF 29th September, 2010 From 2030 – 2130, Kharagpur was out on the streets. Most students had switched off all power consuming devices and had decided to take the leisurely 2.2 (a walk around the 2.2km long stretch of road that connects all major locations in IIT Kharagpur) with friends. Why? Because, AIESEC in IIT Kharagpur organised a campus-wide Switch OFF to create awareness about the need of the hour. AIESEC IIT Kharagpur conveyed the message successfully that power saving need to be done on a regular basis and that our future lies in our hands. All the major halls switched off lights completely and showed their unity. The only way to make change happen is to make a stand. Make a stand for nature. 17
  • 19. IIT Kharagpur 10/10/10 with ‘I am Gurgaon’ 10th October, 2010 All around the world, people have gathered together to stand up against a common goal, aiming to reduce carbon content by 10%. Thousands of events, from the large iconic to small practical actions, across the globe have marked today as the largest day of positive action against climate change ever. We, a small bunch of students representing AIESEC IIT Kharagpur, along with I am Gurgaon, had organized an event of this Global Day of Action in our capital city, New Delhi at the Aravalli Biodiversity Park. The following eminent delegates from the administrative and social fronts had graced the occasion today morning with their presence.  Mr R. C. Mishra: IPS, IG police Haryana, Environmental Scientist.  Mr. Rajesh Khullar: IAS, Commissioner Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon.  Mr. Gagan Sharma, Chairman Wizcraft, Apra Group, Kingdom of Dreams  Mrs Neelima Sharma: Head of Saksham Group, an NGO for underprivileged children.  Mr. Vivek Kamboj: Head of Haryali, an NGO and he is also the grandson of legendary freedom fighter Udham Singh.  Dr. Lokesh Abrol: Leading physician, Environmentalist, managing trustee of Gurugram Gaushala. Not only that, residents of DLF Foundation, representatives from Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, Forest Department of the Government of Haryana and around 50-55 children, of the age 7-15, from Government school run by NGO: Saksham too attended the event. The event commenced with the introduction followed by a warm welcome speech by Dr. Abrol. Mayur Rastogi & Abhimanyu Abrol of AIESEC IIT Kharagpur, the world‟s largest student run organization, talked about AIESEC, the green initiatives like Energy Audit of the entire IIT Kharagpur Campus, Inter-IIT Energy Saving Championship and also about their upcoming event, Vision Green 2010 on 23rd -24th October, a step towards greening the future. 18
  • 20. IIT Kharagpur Mr. RC Mishra spoke about the „true meaning‟ of environment and its conservation. According to him, “Planting a tree is the biggest contribution to the society even bigger than if we continuously from birth to death keep on donating to needy people.” He proved it mathematically as well. Dr. Abrol, Mr Gagan Sharma and Mrs. Neelima Sharma also added to him. Mr. Vivek Khamboj enlightened everyone when he described the way in which a Peepal tree can be uprooted from some area and re- planted somewhere else. We need to take care that the roots are not destroyed. Measures are taken to ensure that enough support and nutrition is provided to the tree at the new location. The Head of Vaish Samaaj, resident organisation formed by residents of DLF, spoke about the environment. After that everyone went to plant saplings. The officer from Department of Forest demonstrated the way in which a sapling is sown in the earth. First the polythene containing the mud and the roots of the sapling is torn taking care that the mud doesn‟t break/become loose. Then the sapling is firmly sown in the ground and watered regularly. Kids were divided into groups of 4 and 1 senior person was associated with them and each group planted 1-2 saplings. Children were over-joyed and everyone was energetic in planting the saplings. Finally, after all hard work, snacks came along. A copy, pencil, rubber and stationary were distributed among the school children. This event truly represented all the different sectors of the society, the kids, the youth and the elders, all coming together for the Noble cause of creating a POSITIVE IMPACT on our very own Environment. The smile on the kid‟s faces when they planted their own saplings and impacted Mother Nature and the overall satisfaction that we gave back a little to our very own Earth, everything together just made it a perfect ending. 19
