Synopsis
Isolation is a story based around the apparent
superiority of the emotionally stable over the
unstable. The story surrounds a group of friends
(Charlie Crooker, Eddie Starker, Katie Smith), who
expel a boy (Jamie Toole) from their circle of
2. friendship. The film is set in a non-chronological
order, it begins with the three of them preparing
for a night out. Whilst they are getting ready, they
are each playing the same song, which further
reinforces their reputation as close friends; there
is a noise in the background, which provokes each of
them to turn around to assess the situation. At this
point the film cuts back to earlier in the week and
all the friends are at school chatting about the
Friday night ahead. At this point, Jamie walks past
and Eddie starts to poke fun at him, tormenting him
for the way he looks, Jamie tries to ignore him but
Eddie wont let him past. Eddie starts to get more
and more aggressive as Jamie ignores his quips.
Eddie lets him walk past but spits on his back,
Katie is laughing in the background but Charlie
appears disheartened by Eddie’s behavior towards
Jamie. The bell goes and the next scene is in a
classroom where Charlie and Jamie are in the same
row of seats, Charlie makes an attempt to reconcile
with Jamie, but Jamie sees him as ringleader to the
whole thing and refuses his apology.
The film then cuts to the end of the day and Eddie
and Charlie are walking back, Katie is in a
detention for a missing piece of homework for a
Media Studies teacher, Eddie turns to Charlie and
asks him whether he has a lighter, Charlie does and
hands it to Eddie, Eddie then pulls out a joint and
proceeds to light it, he takes a few drags and then
attempts to hand it to Charlie, he refuses and
Charlie starts to talk to Eddie about the incident
that lunchtime. Charlie sees his actions as
unacceptable but Eddie disagrees and proceeds to
remind him of what Jamie did to them, just as Eddie
is about to reveal, the boys walk out into the road
as a car pulls into that road, the car nearly hits
them and starts to honk at the boys. The boy’s turn
and start to hurl abuse at the driver of the flash
Mercedes, the driver gets out of the car and the
boys start to run off, still hurling abuse. The
camera follows them down the road and around the
corner where they enter their estate. They say their
goodbyes and each turn into their individual houses.
Charlie enters his house, and his mum is there. She
asks him how his day was and he says it was as
always- just school. He enters the kitchen whilst
maintaining a conversation with his mum; he cuts
some bread and puts it in the toaster. He then tells
her about the exchange between Eddie and Jamie and
he seems rather worried, there is a moment of
sensitivity but that is quickly forgotten when he
3. hears the sound of the toaster popping up, he grabs
the toast and runs upstairs to his room where he
starts to play loud music.
The film lingers on Charlie, intersected with scenes
with Katie, Eddie and Jamie. Charlie is falling
asleep and then there is the sound of the school
bell, and it cuts to the front gates of the school,
Charlie meets his friend Ally, who offers him a
cigarette, Charlie accepts and they stand outside
the gates smoking. Ally invites Charlie to his party
on the Friday but says that he “cant bring that
wasteman friend of his Eddie” Charlie says “what you
don’t like Ed?” Ally says “Nah I hate him bruv, he
f*****d my girl last month”, “Can you bring Katie as
well? She’s seeexyyyy!” Charlie considers the offer
and decides to change his current plans of going out
with Eddie and Katie. When Charlie tells them, Eddie
is angered by Charlie’s sudden decision to change
his plans and is exclusion from the party, and
refuses to talk to them for the rest of the day. The
film then picks on Eddie for the middle section
And follows Eddie throughout the day. He avoids
Charlie and Katie and decides instead to brood on
his own, feeling sorry for himself. The day ends and
Eddie is walking home on his own smoking a joint
again, this is significant because the continual use
of weed has created weed psychosis in his head, he
then starts to become paranoid and goes home to
research violent crimes- his interest. It then cuts
to Ally and his mates, who are waiting at the gates,
smoking cigarettes, Jamie walks past and Ally and
his mates mug him for his phone and money. The film
then follows Jamie on his way home, he gets home and
runs upstairs, and he puts on a sad song and works
himself up into a rage. The next day Charlie and
Katie are at school waiting for Eddie but he doesn’t
show up and Katie and Charlie start to speculate on
his whereabouts. The film cuts to Ally and his mates
who are waiting in an alley way, talking and
generally being mischievous and the camera goes to a
long shot and two feet appear and a chain drops down
and drags along the floor- you hear Ally shout:
“What the f**k do you want? Come back for more
yeah!?” then the screen turns black and you hear
screams and shouts. There is a time lapse and it is
then night and there is the same establishing shot
as in the beginning and the same music is paying,
the same scene plays out but this time it is
revealed that Eddie is the murderer and he uses a
chain to kill Charlie, the same chain he used to
kill Alley and his friends. The film ends with Eddie
4. getting away
