1. How camera shots are used in
opening sequences to create meaning
Aivaras Vaitiekunas
2. Extreme long shot
This is an extreme long shot which
shows the location of the film and where
the characters are going to be at the
beginning of the film. To the audience
this shows that the train station and the
train will be the key to this scene and
shows that some sort of action will
happen here.
Extreme long shots are used to identify the location of the scene for the audience
Show any hidden things for example if someone is riding a car in the far corner o
The director wants the audience to spot the car.
In this shot we see the Ferris wheel and it
Seems like its a fair or an amusement park
This also shows that this might be the second
Location of the scene to which they are going
To be heading to.
3. Long shot
Long shots are used to show characters
location and also the things going around them.
In this shot we see that this is set in a tunnel
which seems to be in a stadium and they are
all dressed in the same cloths which us the
audience will think that they are either in a
gang or a group who is about to perform.
In this shot we see that the group or gang
in a long shot which shows the location wh
seems like the entrance to something and
this shows what they are wearing and thei
movement. This also tells us that they are
entering a location which something is abo
happen, so this gives the audience some s
4. Medium shot
The medium shot is a shot which
allows the audience to see the
characters clothing and body
language and facial expressions.
In this shot we see that the
characters are wearing some
vests with no shirts this shows the
audience that they do not care
how they look and tells us that
they are some sort of rebels. We
also see that they are wearing the
same cloths which tells us that
In this shot we see his body
they are part of something
language where the character is together.
punching the handle bars in the
train which shows us his
rebellion side and also we see
his facial expression which tells
us that he is angry so he is
trying to release the anger out
on random objects.
5. Close up
The close up is used to show the
characters expressions or an
objects details. In this shot we see
that the character is having a
conversation and we also see that
he is not in a good mood. We can
see that he is also looking like he
has been frightened or just
realised something bad has
happened. In this shot we can see again that
the character seems like he is
talking to someone and his facial
expression shows that he is not
that happy. He is looking down
into something or someone which
tells us that he is making eye
contact with someone below him
or he is talking to a crowd.
6. Extreme close up
The extreme close up is used to show the map of the
locations the characters are riding past as you can see
the picture on the right is of a train that keeps going past.
The picture on the left shows the location of where the
groups are going to. The extreme close ups are used to
show extreme detail in an object or to show specific
emotion for example an extreme close up of the eye to
show the audience if the person is crying.
7. Track
The track shot is a shot which follows the
character or object being them. In this track shot
we see the camera is following the characters
behind them while they are walking through the
tunnel.
8. Pan
The pan shot is used to show something from side to
side, like in this scene we see on the left it first shows
the fire in the vase which shows that the fire is danger
so this can indicate to us that there might be danger
and then on the right we see that the camera has
moved from left to right (pan shot) and we see that
there is a lot of people and this can mean that there
will be some danger since there was the fire on the
start of the pan shot.
9. Tilt
The tilt shot is used in the same way as the pan shot just this
time it goes from down to up or up to down to show something
inside of a wardrobe or to show more detail in one shot like they
have done in this one.
On the left we see that the picture is only showing the peoples
feet which we cant see a lot of detail in that and then on the right
we see that the camera tilts up to show more detail in what they
are doing and where they are, as we can see that the group of
gang members are walking the subway and scaring people in the
process.
10. Zoom
Zoom is used to show emotions and expressions
and how the characters are feeling, specially for
horrors and thrillers and many other genres of
film. In this shot we can see that actor is picking
up money and then when he is walking away the
camera zooms out to show his body and his body
language.
11. Cut
These are the first two shots of the first scene of the movie.
The cut jumps from one scene to another which is still the same
mood and it both has the black scene with the lights on which
show that scene is dark. The first scene lasts for 00:23 seconds
which is the scene on the left and then it jumps to another scene
of the train and the scene on the right lasts from 00:23 to 01:03
with the same mood but it has some more effects than the still
video of the ferris wheel, which the right scene has a moving
video which it follows the train to the location it is going.
12. pace
The pace of the video is slow at the start
and it keeps switching from one scene
to another in the same pace to show the
audience about the characters and the
locations and in the scenes where the
trains are going past the clip speeds up
and then slows down to normal pace
again.
13. Performance – speech
In this performance we
hear that the character
is talking about how the
owner ‘sirus’ wants
everything to be calm
and he talks in a calm
manner which tells the
audience that he is
chilled out character.
In this scene we also
hear that the character
is also talking to the
person in a smooth
way without any angry
expressions so they
seem to be chilled out
14. Performance – body language
In this scene we see that the main
group seems to be chilled out and the
guy on the left is just holding on to the
handle bars while everyone else is just
play fighting this shows that the
character on the left does not care
about his friends messing around. Also
we can see that the guy on the right is
upset because of the middle man and
this is also shown through his body
language by slouching forward and
having a sad face. The guy in the
middle is stood up with his arms out
looking like he is about to fight.
The shot on the right shows the group
standing together in the train and they
all look like they are worried or thinking
about something for example the
person in the middle seems like he is
15. Performance – facial expressions
In this shot we see that the
actor seems to be focused and
interested in what he is
thinking, this can be engaging
because he seems interested
and the audience would like to
know why. The way we can tell
that the character is looking up
with his mouth closed and his
eyebrows close together
slightly facing up.
In this shot we see that both of
the characters are talking to
each other they both look
angry. The way we can see
this is by both of their mouths
closed and their eyebrows
16. Diegetic
The sound in the beginning is high pitched with
bells ringing then it gets louder and louder as the
song progresses with the rest of the instruments.
The music stops as the first character starts
speaking and then begins again with a more
upbeat tempo song and the drums begin to play
when the second character starts speaking.
The music is good because it gets the audiences
attention by having a upbeat song and get
everyone buzzing when it progresses more and
more. The song sets the mood for the film as it is
a mysterious song with a mysterious start to the
movie because we don’t know what's about to
17. Non-diegetic
There are a few non diegetic sounds within the
beginning of the film when the train is moving the
sound is heard with it which tells us that they
didn’t make the sound up. The non diegetic
sound also comes from the characters speaking.
We also hear non diegetic sound from when the
group is entering the train this would have less
affect to the audience if they only had music
playing because it would not be as realistic.
Some sounds are enhanced for better audio
experience for example when the characters are
speaking the sound from the wind which the
camera picked up makes it sound more realistic
18. Mise en scene - Setting
The setting in the opening sequence of
the film ‘The Warriors’, there are two
main locations. One of them is the train
which they all meet up and go to their
second location which is the
playground. The train looks like its been
vandalised which might mean that the
city they are in might of been bad place
because there are graffiti on the trains
sides. This relates to the audience
because they might be curious in why
they are going through a dangerous
looking place.
The second location we see that
everyone is in a playground and there
are a lot of people. While everyone is
colour coordinated fir example some of
the groups have different colours to
others and this is suspicious for the
19. Mise en scene - Costume
Each character has the same clothing within
the groups but they still have other types of
costume for example the guy on the right has
some head gear on which represents him.
The small towel looks like its been warn out
which the audience might wonder why and it
might be that the movie is full of action and
fast pace cuts. The red jacket looks like its
been hand made with quality fabric which
shows to the audience that they have to
have money to make them clothes, which
show that character must have been through
a lot of experience.
This time the character on the right has
different type of clothing which the group also
have. Each group has their styles with a little
twist from each character for example the
character on the left of the middle character
has a white strip which he might think it looks
better on him or it might be a rank system.
20. Mise en scene - Figure
expression
Facial expression
The facial expression in this shot shows that the character
is serious and focused on what he is doing. This shows to
the audience that he is knowing what he is doing.
Although there is not that much facial expressions in the
start because everyone is confused or either focused on
going to their destination.
21. Mise en scene - Props
There was not a lot of props
used in the start of the opening
sequence but they did use
money which the character
used to let his group past the
security in the train station.
The second prop which was
used was a graffiti spray can
this was told for the character
to use everywhere so that
everyone knows that the group
has been there.
The audience are curious and
suspicious because they will
wonder why the second prop
(spray can) was used to spray
around the city for others to
