This document discusses different approaches to regulating prostitution across various jurisdictions. Some places have legalized and regulated prostitution and brothels, some have legalized prostitution but not brothels, others have criminalized purchasing sex but not selling it, and some have made all prostitution illegal by criminally prosecuting both prostitutes and clients. The concluding paragraph questions whether publicly discussing what was once a private topic paradoxically removes it from the public sphere.

Many Americans frown at the thought of prostitution. The only place in the United States where prostitution is legal is Las Vegas.
Therefore, it may come as a surprise to many that prostitution is legal in most of Europe. Although the laws differ from country to country, Switzerland, Turkey, Greece, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Hungary, all allow prostitution to happen and regulate it through their government.
Switzerland has recently been in the news when it comes to prostitution. As one of the seven European countries that regulates prostitution, the influx of prostitutes has been enormous. The prostitutes must pay a small tax to work but are allowed to work freely on the streets and in brothels.
However, Zurich has been facing problems lately with the amount of prostitution and it’s effects on the city. There is a lot of crime associated with prostitution, including drugs, theft, rape, and murder. There have also been complaints on prostitution happening on private property. So the city of Zurich decided to take action.
Most of the prostitution happening in Zurich was on a busy red light street next to the river. To keep prostitution away from this area, a radical plan was put in place. The city residents voted 52% to 48% to build “sex boxes” in an old slaughter house next to the railroad in the hopes that the prostitutes would be out of the public eye.
Sex boxes are a fairly recent creation and only found in a few other locations. They work almost as a drivethru. The customer will drive down a road lined with women selling themselves. The customer would pull over and discuss prices before picking her up and continuing down the road.
Once the woman is in the car the customer then finds an open box. The box is designed with the safety of the prostitute in mind. The car must pull up so that the driver cannot open his door. However, the passenger side door has room to open onto a sidewalk.
If the woman were to need it, there is a safety button next to the car that will alert a social worker that she is in need of help.
The facility is full of signs reminding guests of the rules. The customer must be at least 18 and driving a car. There must only be one customer per car. The customer must drive directly to the boxes once the woman is in the car. They ask that all condoms and other trash be thrown away and not left on the ground. And lastly, There are no cameras, videos, or any other form of recording that could reveal who is taking part.
The facility also has a series of advertisements to have protected sex in the fight to stop AIDs.
