1. Jesus First [11/11]
‘Making Disciples 2’
Matthew 6: 33 ... seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given to
you as well.
3. So, What Does
‘Making Disciples’
Look Like ?
- Going Overseas ?
- UK Church Plant ?
- Local ‘Ministry’ ?
- Following Jesus ?
- Loving People ?
4. The Great Commission
Matthew 28: 18-20
... Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to me.’
Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptising them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of
the age.
5. The Greatest Commandments
Matthew 22: 36-40
Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in
the Law?
Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as
yourself.’
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments.
6. The Sermon on the mount
5:1 The Beatitudes … Unexpected blessings
Salt of the earth, a city on a hill, a bright light
Fulfilment of the Law, a greater righteousness
Don’t murder, don’t insult others, be reconciled
Beware lust, Adultery begins in the eyes & heart
7. The Sermon on the mount
Don’t divorce
Speak simply, Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’
Forget revenge, give more than you’re asked for
Love enemies, pray for those who persecute you
Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect
8. The Sermon on the mount
6:4 Give in secret, be rewarded by the Father
6:6 Pray in secret, be rewarded by the Father
6:18 Fast in secret, be rewarded by the Father
6:24 Don’t serve money, store up future rewards
6:33 Don’t worry, seek God’s righteous kingdom
9. Matthew 6: 25-26
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your
life, what you will eat or drink; or about your
body, what you will wear. Is not life more
important than food, and the body more
important than clothes?
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or
reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly
Father feeds them. Are you not much more
valuable than they?
10. Matthew 6: 27-30
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to
his life? And why do you worry about clothes? See
how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labour
or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all
his splendour was dressed like one of these.
If that is how God clothes the grass of the
field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown
into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O
you of little faith?
11. Matthew 6: 31-34
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or
‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
For the pagans run after all these things, and your
heavenly Father knows that you need them.
But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given
to you as well.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own.
12. The Sermon on the mount
7:1 Do not judge, or you too will be judged
Keep Praying ! Go on Asking, Seeking, Knocking
True & false prophets, good trees bear good fruit
True & false disciples, NOT all who call me Lord
Wise & foolish builders, use good foundations
Editor's Notes
Making disciplesBeing different people. Who are we going to be.Identity, Worship, Community, Mission
This is what we have been teaching though over these last 10 weeksStarts with Who God is, and what he has done.Information, revelation. So what that means for you as a child of God, an adopted sonThat naturally leads through to worshipWe’re thankful for what he has doneBut we worship him for who he is.Taste and see that the Lord is good, aiming for awe and intimacyWorship prepares us for being part of the Christian community Loving one another, being family, working things out.Living authentic real lives, helping one anotherLeads to mission, we’ve been made for thisThis is God’s love in action, spilling out, loving others.
Laying down your life … it costs everything.Jesus, all for Jesus all I am or have or ever hope to be.Believers? Do we believe? Will we?
What and HowThis is the mission of God, we aren’t to do it because we should or we have to.Though you could do it for these reasons. It’s just that these reasons are insufficient. They don’t carry you very far
Who and WhyCreated for glory, created for love, created to embody the Holy Spirit. The love of neighbour was seen as extending only as far as the people of God, Jesus extended ‘neighbour’ to include even hated enemies.
He’s talking to the crowds, primarily the poor. Uncertain existence, largely living hand to mouth
Father loves to reward us … give him some opportunities!
Don’t worry about your selfA life lived following Jesus
Worrying about the future is largely wasted! Most of things people worry about never happen.Worse than that, worry cuts straight across your relationship with God and ultimately destroys faith … because worry is a lack of trust in God, and the opposite of faith.Determine again today that you will give up on worry and choose to trust.
