This document discusses potential media institutions that could distribute an independent film. It notes that the film could be crowd-funded like the film "The Age of Stupid". It also discusses how web 2.0 has changed film distribution by allowing independent films to compete with Hollywood. Potential distributors mentioned include art house cinemas, film festivals, and smaller independent distributors that could be found at festivals. Mainstream distributors and multiplex cinemas are seen as unlikely due to the independent and niche nature of the film.
2. Web 2.0 – How could we fund and distribnute?
• The Age of Stupid was crowd
funded, this is when an amount of
individuals or groups put forward
money to help with creative projects
or small business. People pledged
between £500 & £35,000 and by the
end totalled their budget to £450,000
from 223 different people. Also the
live premiere was broadcasted via
satellite to 42 other locations and only
had 1% carbon emissions compared
to normal cinema openings. Our film
could opt to use a similar method to
finance the film.
• Web 2.0 which has completely affected audiences and has changed the way films are
produced, from production to distribution to exhibition, changing how the creative
triangle can perform their jobs. The definition of Web 2.0 is due to the interactive
ability for the users, this is the ability to upload, download and change the internet.
From the intuitional side of the industry the internet had enabled non-industrial/
independent film companies to compete with the industrial/ Hollywood style
companies, democratising the film industries right down to the amateur film makers.
3. Art House Cinema
• Our film is considered to be an
indie film so is more likely to be
shown at a art-house cinema.
Low production value and gritty
style adds to the idea that it would
fit better with an art house
audience. So a common
distributer for this kind of genre
may be more likely, for example
Art House Films.
• But the plot of the film my not be
intellectual enough for audiences
of this kind.
Film Festivals
• Our film is more likely to find its
fame in film festivals, as where
many film do. Here we could find
a distributor if we didn’t already
have one. Smaller distributors
may be able to find us here, e.g.
Vertigo films. Especially if it is a
British film festival.
4. Mainstream cinema
• Mainstream distributor such
as 20th
Century Fox would be
very unlikely to invest in our
film as it is not a likely
blockbuster and does not keep
to the high production value of
tentpole films.
• These films are more directed
towards mass audience with
large box office takings. Our
indie thriller would appeal to a
more niche audience and so is
not likely to reach the income
they hope for.
• This also links to the fact our
movie is not likely to be shown
in the mainstream multiplex
cinemas either.
