- 2. ¿What is GPS? INTRODUCTION Is a space-based global navigation satellite system , developed by U.S. Navy around 1970. GPS has become a widely used aid to navigation worldwide, and a useful tool for map-making, land surveying (a topography branch to delimit surfaces ), commerce, scientific uses, tracking and hobbies such as geocaching and waymarking.

- Most people know what is this, even an increasing group have one of them. Sometimes it can be amazing and overwhelming to consider the way that technology has changed our lives. Before that, we would have to rely on paper maps to guide us along our journeys, now we have a little electronic device that will talk to us as we drive.
- Although weather conditions it isn’t a problem to this systems, we will see that it’s affected by other external agents

- GPS system is based on WGS (World Geodetic System – 1984), an extension from NAD83. A Datum is a known surface (usually a ellipsoid) which is used to describe the location of unknown points on the earth. Since these can have different radii and centre points, same point in the Earth can have quite different coordinates depending on the datum used to make the measurement. An Example of differences between 2 datums.
- If you are working in a construction project, pay attention on which DATUM are you using, because otherwise… Referencing coordinates to the wrong datum can result in position errors of hundreds of meters…
