Personal Health/Fitness Care Devices Patent Landscape
Personal fitness/health care using wearable/portable devices is becoming a part of our personal lives. Patent
information can provide insights regarding the state of the art of the wearable/portable devices innovations for the
personal fitness/health care applications.
To find the leading innovators in the personal fitness/health care devices, more than 1000 published patent
applications and issued patents in the USPTO as of Oct. 20, 2015 that are related to the personal fitness/health care
devices are reviewed. To expedite the search and review process, citation based Amber Cluster Search was
exploited. Traditional keyword search based patent research usually generates a large set of data for an expert
review to filter out patents that are not related to the research subject matter. Similarity evaluation in the citation
cluster search can automate the time consuming manual review process to filter out nonrelevant patents.
Nearly 600 patent applications are selected as the key patents for the personal fitness/health care devices. In
number of patent applications, Fitbit is the leader followed by Nike, Adidas, Apple, Samsung Electronics,
BlackRock Advisors (Jawbone), Tanita Co, Garmin Switzrand and Impect Sports Technology.
