Transformational leaders possess four characteristics.
The first is intellectual stimulation. Transformational
leaders challenge the status quo; encourage creativity;
explore new ways of doing things; and pursue new
opportunities to learn and to grow.

To encourage intellectual stimulation in the classroom, I use a mix of
10-minute lessons, discussion, and activity. I challenge the way my
students currently think about communication and presentation.
Together, we come up with newer, better, and more creative ways to
solve problems through written, verbal, and visual communication
using guidance from experts like Nancy Duarte and Garr Reynolds.

The second characteristic of transformational leaders
is individualized consideration. Transformational
leaders encourage followers; foster supportive
relationships; keep lines of communication open; and
pursue a free-flowing exchange of ideas.

I give my students individualized consideration both in and out of
the classroom. During office hours, I meet one-on-one with students
to address their personal educational needs. I meet with students
after hours and on weekends to accommodate their busy lives. I
send reminder emails often including QuickTime video explanations
in order to best support my students’ individual learning styles.

The third characteristic of transformational leaders is
inspirational motivation. Transformational leaders
communicate a clear vision to others; excite others to
share that vision; and inspire passion to achieve goals.

I strive to inspire and motivate my students on our first day by
giving them a clear vision of the course and what I hope for them
after they complete the class. I communicate my 3 goals with them
and ask them to think of 3 goals of their own. I spend ample class
time asking them to reflect on how they plan to meet their 3 goals.

The fourth and final characteristic of transformational
leaders is idealized influence. Transformational
leaders serve as role models. Others trust and respect
them; emulate them; and internalize their perspectives.

Without idealized influence, a teacher’s message will not resonate.
In my classroom, I respect my students and their opinions, and I
encourage them to be better not only at the subject we are learning
but also to be better people. To do this, I teach life lessons along
with communication skills, and I must embody those life lessons.
