5. Four main outcomes for all participants, both old and young were:
Increased understanding, friendship, enjoyment and confidence
For older people, three main outcomes were related to health and
well-being, reduced isolation and a renewed sense of worth
For young people, two main outcomes were related to the gaining
of specific skills and increased self-esteem
Outcomes for individuals can also have an impact at a community
level including improved community cohesion – breaking down
barriers and challenging pre conceived ideas

IMPROVING HEALTH & WELLBEING SEMINAR
Intergenerational befriending can be complex and
the various activities require careful planning and
supervision to be successful.
It is vital that staff facilitating intergenerational work
have the skills and confidence to deal with the
unexpected and are able to react appropriately
when issues arise.
12. YOUNG SCOT AWARDS
HERITAGE AWARD
Connect Project, Voluntary Action Orkney, 16-
19
A team of youngsters keen to help preserve
some of Scotland’s most valuable history – the
memories and lives of its older generation.
What began as an intergenerational
befriending project with one sheltered housing
scheme has now spread to four others. The
group do memory boxes, flower arranging,
photography of local heritage sites, tea
dances, music, Orcadian dialect and baking.
They learn about traditions and experiences
from OAPs that might have been lost.
