Lev Manovich introduces
(1960)five principles for the
new media
1. Numerical Representation.
2. Modularity.
3. Automation.
4. Variability.
5. Transcoding.

Modularity
•New media is made of a bunch of components or
modules with an individual identity.
•These components can be mixed in many ways to
compose larger objects. They can interact to add
some behaviour and intelligence and offer them to
the end-user, or just in order to be exposed in the
same interface.

Importance & Usefulness of Modularity
uses
• Google image search(takes images from websites
and puts in new context—enabled by modular
structure of the web)
• The concept of “layers” (in image, video, or sound
editors)

Main key pillar of modularity
Importance of elements and their role in making
meaningful modules
Other important pillar of modularity
• Importance of the big picture.
• Usefulness (modification, functionality
and efficient storage) example is 3D
computer graphics representation.
• Behaviour and intelligence.
• Usability.
Nano Technology
Definition: is sometimes called, molecular
manufacturing , is a branch of engineering
that deals with the design and manufacture
of extremely small electronic circuits and
mechanical devices built at the molecular
level of matter.

Nano Technology & media: Merge
Using new media elements and components
to design and manufacture new styles and
devices for the good of humankind.
Modularity current and future uses
• Examples
Ex.1 : Laptops, computers, tablets, tabs,
I pads = generally made of various separate
small individual programmes (Video recorder
+ Tape recorder +PlayStation + radio + virtual
Gallery) creating one entity of interactive
machine.
Ex.2: Video conferencing = audio + calling + conferencing and
meeting + video
file://localhost/Users/rayaalhajri/Documents/final presentaiton/link2.pptx
Ex.3: Social communications on internet
such as Facebook = images + texts + videos.
Ex.4: the piano software in Apple I PAD= motion + sound
+ visual image of piano= portable piano good
for children and even adults to learn playing
the piano.
