“Plants, Plants, Plants” The title of our 3rd grade classroom unit of plants is “Plants, Plants, Plants”. Each student will have a project to complete in this unit called “Grow Plant, Grow”.
Content: Do all plants need sunlight need to survive? Do all plants go through photosynthesis? What are two plants that live in cold climates? Unit: What are some essential elements that most plants need to survive? How many different plant classifications are there? Essential: What are some different ways we can help plants to survive in our climate today? Questions
During this unit students will learn of different kinds of plants. Plants that live in cold climates, hot climates, need sunlight, some that don’t need sunlight, etc. We will study/discuss a different plan each day. Each student will be required to do a project in this unit (Grow Plant, Grow). Students will pick a plant from a list provided by the teacher to grow at their house for two weeks. The students will be required to write a daily log about what their plant looks like and any grow/changes that the plant had each day. The students will also be required to take pictures of their plant every 3 days. At the end of the two weeks, each student will present their plant to the class, with a presentation about their particular plant. They will also need to bring their plant (that they grew at home) to class that day. I think this unit and project will be informational and fun for the students. Summary of Unit
The role of the teacher is to teach and guide the students along. I will be teaching the students each day about a different plant. We will also be doing different activities related to plants throughout each week. I will also ask them each day if there are any questions they have about their projects they are doing at home. I will answer their questions and tell them of any announcements there may be. Role of the Teacher
Students will be responsible for a growing a plant at home for two weeks. They will be responsible for taking pictures of their plants, writing in a daily log about their plants, and creating a presentation about their plant. Parents please help children with growing the plant and remembering the tasks that need to be completed within the two weeks. Role of Parent and Student
The unit and project will teach students more about plants. It will teach them the different things plants need to grow, how plants grow, what plants look like, and the daily tasks needed to help plants grow. The project will also help students with learning responsibility by having to grow their own plant and doing other tasks required for the project. Benefits of the Unit
ACOS: SC :7 (3rd grade): Describe the life cycle of plants, including seed, seed germination, growth, and reproduction. ACOS:SC:10(3rd grade): Determine habitat conditions that support plant growth and survival. Standards for this Unit
Students will know the life cycle of a plant, about the seed, the growth, and the reproduction by growing their own plants. Students will be able to state the different conditions certain plants can survive in and the conditions they won't. Objectives for the Unit
Is learning through experience/hands-on learning. It gives students a different way to learn than just by lecture. It lets them use their cognitive thinking skills. It shows a connection to real-world situation by having them grow their own plant, which many people do today. Let students work together in groups on different scenarios/activities. Project Based Learning
How Project Based Learning will be implemented in my classroom? The students will learn by doing hands-on activities, in which they will grow their own plant. By having a project and other activities throughout the unit that the students will learn through project-based learning. The students will use their cognitive thinking skills by doing these tasks. By having the students grow their own plants it helps them to connect it to real life, when their mom or someone they know who grows plants. The students will work together in small groups doing different activities about plants throughout the unit.
