OCLIP
STRATEGIC OUTLINE
OCLIP
• The Open Computer Literacy Program is a strategic intervention program designed to raise computer literacy in
    Nigeria.

• It is based on the knowledge that a literate population is VITAL for development

• It also is an apostle of skill acquisition as a vital tool for personal and national development

• The common denominator today is computers.

• By empowering the generations coming we are securing our own futures. As a people and a country.

• Education offers specific knowledge for specific purposes.

• Intelligence applies knowledge to solve specific challenges

• OCLIP seeks to intelligently educate and empower the children with the basic tool of the new world economy.

• From schools through health , commerce communication and even recreation, computers are the new window
    of opportunity.

• The door is in front of the children the key is in the lock we seek to simply teach them how to unlock it , open
the door and walk into their future.
Goals

• Provide free ICT and language training to
Nigerian kids aged 10 to 17 by 2020.
                                              1
                                              million

• Raise literacy levels by 30% in target segment by
    2020
                                        5
• Track and monitor recipients over a year period and
provide support and further free business training in
  phase 2 of the project.
Key Assertion
• Computer Literacy is the new literacy for developing countries.

• This is because it combines language skills covering use of English or national
    language and skill acquisition.

• Using computers is a SKILL hence OCLIP is creating skilled literate young people

• The long term goals offer a literate nation that is ready to embrace the future.

• This is a future that is ICT driven from communication through medicine
    commerce and improved lifestyles.

• It also opens the children to the world of the internet shaping positively their
world views and allowing them access to knowledge that can be applied.

• Empowerment leads to greater number of small businesses which are the
    backbone of development
OCLIP Centres
• Partner secondary schools will be designated OCLIP centres.

• Primary targets will be in educationally disadvantaged areas.

• Schools have been selected because they will eliminate the need
  for tents and other paraphernalia

• Power can also be routed directly from the grid or generated.

• All centres will also have wireless internet access
Hardware Requirements
• One computer per child during classes.

• This is NON NEGOTIABLE.

• However to be cost effective each computer will have
as many as 5 guest accounts.

• Thus 200 computers would train 1000 kids
depending on scheduling and windows of opportunity.
Software Requirements
• Facilitators. These are key to the success of the project

• Their duties include:
     – Instruction
     – Mentoring and Inspiration
     – Identification of brightest prospects for further support

• Child evaluation based on:
     – Computer literacy
     – Social adaptation and adjustment
     – Team skills
     – Moral persuasion reflected in choices made during class interactions and exams.

• Crime, drug abuse and absenteeism levels increased 60% in American schools AFTER Moral
Instruction was dropped as a subject in ALL schools.

• Any wonder why we are facing problems with kids in Nigeria AFTER it was dropped from the
    curriculum in Nigeria?

• However OCLIP is of the belief that if the kids see positive role models they will begin to align.
Volunteer System
• The systems seeks to get people who are employed to be facilitators.

• In every state of Nigeria there are at least 1000 employed Nigerians in the corporate
    sector alone.

• A 5% recruitment success rate would provide 50 facilitators.
• With class size FIXED at 50 students 2500 children can be taught monthly.

• These numbers are conservative estimates but show the potential.

• The key function of the facilitators is to INSPIRE the children.

• A dearth of role models outside sports and music industry circles have caused and will cause
us greater problems if not addressed.

• Children will imitate ANY model of success they see.

• OCLIP seeks to offer different role models from corporate and SME Nigeria.
OCLIP Classes

• 4 hours of ICT and practical use.
• 1 hour of Language improvement skills

• Take home assignments will also be served up
