3. 1918- 1920 1917, division automobile licensed and registration of South Carolina was created. The division collected tax fees 1918, Alaska issued “Bone Dry” law Banned the use of alcohol for medical use, recreational use, and had increase violations if caught 1920, eighteenth amendment became a law. This act became the Volstead act.

4. 1935-1939 1935, first time in Indiana each drive had to purchase a license for 50 cents. No test was needed. This helped pay for high way patrol 1939, Indiana became the first state to issue a BAC law ( blood content level) to see if the driver was drunk. The limit was set at .15 almost double what it is today, .08 At this time the legal drinking age in 16 states was between the ages of 18, 19, 20.

5. 1969, Teddy Kennedy Teddy drove his car of Dike Bridge and it splashed into the water between Martha's Vineyard and Chappaquiddick Island. Teddy was able to swim to shore while his passenger Mary Jo Kopechne died trapped in the car. Before Teddy talked to officials, he waited a few hours because if he were to get breathalyses it would have shown up that he was drunk.

Today! 2004, The United States made a law that .08 was the national standard for alcohol Drinking and driving is still a major issue today, there are many different organizations for example; DDPO( Drunk Driving Prevention Organization), Safe Ride Home, Smart & Sober, and PADD( People Affected by Drunk Driving) and many more. Drinking and Driving is one of the major causes of death in the United States Today a DUI is a major crime, and a very serious offense. Be safe, and drink responsibly.
