Internet Safety Things to think about while using the Internet Created by A. McKean
Learner Description This presentation is aimed at secondary school age students ages 14-17. This presentation would be used in conjunction with an online science lesson that involve using the Internet to complete a webquest.
Internet Safety This lesson will discuss issues of Internet Safety Yes, I am sure you all know the basic rules: Don’t give out any real info such as your name, birthday, or address. Don’t meet strangers you meet online in the real world. Don’t post inappropriate pictures of yourself or others. But is it really just that simple or easy? Let’s find out!
Video #1 – Profile Penalty Watch the video at http://www.nsteens.org/videos/offline-consequences/ On a separate piece of paper answer the questions posed in this video How do you decide what information and images to post online? Have you or someone you know ever posted something you regret? What information and images are NOT okay to post? Why do people post inappropriate messages and pictures? How can things you post online effect your future?
Things to think about Remember to always think about your online reputation. What does it say about you? Don’t post anything you might regret later in life. Think about who will see this? What will they think? Remember future employers, teachers, friends etc. Use privacy settings to limit access to your page. Remember that online choices have offline consequences.
Video #2 – Terrible Text Watch the video at http://www.nsteens.org/videos/cyberbullying/ On a separate piece of paper answer the questions posed in this video What is cyberbullying? Why do people cyberbully? Have you ever been cyberbullied? What would you do if you were cyberbullied? Why is cyberbullying a bad idea?
Things to think about Never respond to harassing or rude comments but be sure to save or print the evidence Report it! If you are being harassed talk to your parents or guardians, ISP, school, or local law enforcement. Always respect others online. Review your netiquette rules if necessary. Passwords: Change them often and even protect your cell phone. Use privacy settings to block unwanted messages.
Video #3 – Julie’s Journey Go to http://www.netsmartz.org/resources/reallife.htm Click on Julie’s Journey and watch the video While watching the video think about the following questions What Internet safety tips would you have given 13 year old Julie before she started IMing? What would you have told Julie parents before they let her communicate so much online?
Reflection After watching the 3 videos provided and answering the discussion questions has this changed your views on Internet safety? Have you learned anything new or was there something you saw or talked about that you hadn’t seen or thought of before? How important do you think Internet safety education is and why?
