Purpose

Reading items online we often get outraged, inspired,
appalled, animated, and enthusiastic. Certain topics
related to our culture, media, politics, sports, food,
etc. are triggers for responses. It is important to
keep in mind that social media sites are for
communication and sharing. As an involved citizen it
is important to develop a reputation that you are an
expert and professional. Having a bank of pre-written
posts is useful in easily and quickly responding to
others, rather than having to recreate statements over
and over. An advantage to typing your statements is
the ability to copy and paste them at any future time.
A bank of posts that are of high quality is your armor
in political and social discourse.


Writing

Quality writing thoroughly displays a sense of purpose,
is exceptionally clear in support of an opinion,
contains insightful information, supports ideas with
accurate, ideal, and convincing details, examples, and
evidence, provides rich commentary, convincingly
addresses and rebuts the counterarguments, demonstrates
a logical, cohesive organizational structure, provides
precise descriptive language, artful work choice, a
defined voice, an exemplary thesis, and call to action.


Reminders

A few reminders on proper etiquette that will go a long
in making your voice heard: 1) Spell Check, 2) Avoid
typing in all capital letters, 3) Follow the Golden
Rule as you would offline, 5) Maintain consistent
parent/guardian supervision if you are a minor, 6)
Think before posting, 7) Obey copyright laws, 8) Be
aware of bullying, 9) Cite your sources (do not
plagiarize), 10) Double check before you hit “send”.
Remember that conversation is interactive and follows
rules of etiquette such as listening, hearing, taking
turns, focusing on fixing something rather than fixing
people, seeking to understand others and then to be
understood yourself, listening with your eyes, heart,
and ears, repeating back what you heard the other
person say to show the other person you understood.


Persuasion
Many posts you create may be persuasive in manner.
Persuasion requires a goal of changing a person's (or a
group's) attitude or behavior toward some event, idea,
object, or other person(s). Persuasive writing usually
follows the format: I think that...The reason I say
this...Also,...Furthermore,...Some people might argue
that...However, I think...In conclusion...Persuasive
essays include your opinion, the goals, reasons, and
beliefs you share with the audience, this common ground
will lead to convincing, supporting facts to explain,
develop, and support your reasons, and explanation of
the counterarguments, and a call to action--what you
want your audience to physically do to join you in
achieving the goal.


Misconceptions

Some of your posts may also be in regard to
misconceptions: These are incorrect opinions,
misunderstandings, or faulty ways of thinking.
Examples of misconceptions: 1) The belief that
Vikings wore horns on their helmets, 2) The belief
that armor was too heavy for European knights to
maneuver, 3) The belief that ancient peoples, bible
figures, or Christopher Columbus thought the world was
flat, 4) The belief that during the French Revolution
Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, exclaimed “let them
eat cake”.


Misconception Example:

A common misunderstanding of The Constitution of the
United States, Article II, Section 1, Clause 1 is this
“The executive Power shall be vested in a President of
the United States of America. He shall hold his Office
during the Term of four Years, and be directly elected
by voters”. The Founding Fathers created a republican
form of government, wanting the president to be chosen
differently than Congress. The founders setup an
electoral college to select the president. In
December, after the popular election by voters, the
electoral college meets to cast their ballots to choose
the president. Thus, voters do no elect the president.


Links

Often the ideas you wish to include in a conversation
may be best expressed through articles, videos, and
statistics by others. Including links for these in
your pre-written posts or having a separate list of
links to these items is also useful. If you have spent
more than five minutes on social media sites, news
sites, forums, etc. you know that many comments are
made without evidence and proof. This is the key. A
good link to a trusted site can make your statement the
one that stands out.

It is not your job, your responsibility, nor your duty
to hunt down every statement and provide your comment
on it.


How to Categorize Your Bank

You may wish to create individual files labeled by
subject or specific topic. A few examples include
Parenting, Politics, Education, Sports, Immigration,
Economy, Religion, Governor, Food Laws, etc.
