 Miami was named by the Mayaimis, a native tribe who
lived in the area. They took the name from lake
Okeechobee, which was called Mayaimis.
 Maimi has more than 800 parks and is the only city in
the USA that is bordered by 2 separated national parks

 Jacksonville is the largest city in the state of Florida by
population and the largest city by area in the
contiguous United States. It is the county seat of Duval
County, with which the city government consolidated
in 1968.
 Is a city located on the Atlantic coast in southeastern
Florida and the county seat of Miami-Dade County. Is
the 42nd largest city proper in the USA. According to
the USA Census Bureau, Miami’s metro area is the 8th
most populous and 4th largest urban area in the US.

Climate
 Temperature: tempered climate because is not far from
the ocean. In the north there is humid subtropical
climate and in the coast is tropical climate
 Is the warmest state in the USA. In summer the
highest temperature is 43ºC and in winter the lowest
temperature is -19ºC
 Is called the Sunshine State because is very sunny and
also central Florida is called the Lightning Capital of
USA because of the lightning strikes.
Ecology
 Florida has many types of wildlife also is the only
known calving area for the northern right whale.
 One of the famous animals are the Native bear (300 ->
3000) and the non-native snakes and lizards (released
in the wild)

Food
 Florida is known for several unique foods including
key lime pie and Floribbean cuisine

 Florida is home to several unique music genres
including Florida breaks and Miami Bass.
 One of the famous groups of music from Florida are
The Backstreet Boys.
Universities
 Miami has over 200,000 students enrolled in local
colleges and universities, placing it 7th in the nation
per capita universities enrollment. In 2010, the city’s
four largest colleges and universities graduated 28,000
students.
 The important colleges are Miami Dade College,
Florida International University, University of Miami
and Barry University.
Sports
 Florida has a team in four of out of the five major
professional leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL)
