His family owned a
plantation in Maryland
called Terra Rubra.
He studied law in St.
John’s College in
Annapolis.
He was a lawyer from
Baltimore.

Observed British attack on
Fort McHenry during the
War of 1812.
He saw the large American
flag still hanging after battle.
He was so inspired that he
wrote “The Star Spangled
Banner.” This song became
our national anthem.
The song is still sung today
during special events and
it’s a connection because of
its significance to American
culture.

Audubon
Born on April 26, 1785
in Les Cayes, Santo
Domingo.
After his mother
died, he moved to
France in 1791 with his
father, half sister, and
step mother.
He developed a love
for nature, especially
birds.
Drew complex pictures
of birds and studied
with Jacques-Louis

Philadelphia to manage
the family estate, so that
he could avoid joining
Napoleon’s army.

birds which he drew for his
