Introduction. Keep brief.
Point out that can't present everything: aiming to outline the approach expecting questions and development in discussion
Outline: look at what I mean by 'corporisations' and how I see them broadly in NT and against scientific background.
I want to indicate the kinds of theological frames I think are helpful and productive to think about.
Then I want to sketch some ways in which that may mean that we deal with them , communicate with them, and approach them as disciples of Christ.
An opening exercise to get us going.
Briefly discuss in twos or threes the question 'Who is this 'I'?
Thene perhaps share some answers. Noting the difficulty of
moving from individual to corporate,
conceiving of the corporate in agentive terms
Recognising intelligence in terms other than human
'Purposeful' ie they have intentions, goals etc
'Emergent from human collaboration'
Ie they are made of us cf cells:bodies.
Elles sont faites do nous, cellules:corps
They are held together by human culture, feelings and meanings
Drawing on the work of Walter Wink (and also, Yoder, Berkhoff, Stringfellow), we can see corporisations in NT. And particularly clearly, in terms of the definition I have just given in Rev.1-3, the letters to the churches.
In those letters, note the Gk: progression within each 'letter' from addressing a singular entity to addressing the people that make up the church, plural verb forms. The Addressees are simultaneously singular and plural.
Some theological frames / Des trames théologiques
There is in creation a tendency towards synergy and complexity which produces next-level entities.
God's purpose for corporisations is to serve human welfare and the gospel.
Therefore, we serve the good by working with them. But we recognise they share our fallen nature. So, we must sometimes resist or re-purpose them.
Cf. My dog has intelligence and purposes. But he doesn't understand human. I have to learn to speak dog if I want him to behave well.
So how can we help corporisations to behave well?
What gestures and appeals will they understand?
There are three dimensions: the human, the artefactual and the environment.
These are the things that I think we need to understand.
The first three are fairly easily understood.
But it's important to say a bit more about the fourth.
The gospel has a preferential option for the poor.
We therefore understand best when we seee corporisations from the point of view of the marginalised.
By investigating these things we begin to understand what is important, what motivates, how corporisations make decisions.
That helps us work out how to train them.
Just as animals and plants are formed within an ecosystem, and minds within a culture, so corporisations are part of a cultural ecosystem.
They form one another in both mutual and assymetric relationships.
The lesson of MLK and others is to see the human beings caught up in unjust systems as human beings and to seek to build up their humanity and to detach them from the wrongness of the system they work for.
These are some examples of how we might communicate with and train corporisations.
