4. Background
The Maine Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan serves as a blueprint for
what can and should be done at the state and local levels to further cancer
prevention, detection and care efforts in Maine.
The goal of the Maine Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan is to
promote and preserve the health and quality of life of the people and
communities of Maine by minimizing the impact of cancer.
Outlines a strategic approach to minimizing the impact of cancer on
Maine’s people and communities.
Encourages and supports coordination and collaboration

The 2011-2015 Maine Cancer Plan
is organized into four sections

This section looks at issues that are common to all cancers and
all aspects of the cancer continuum.
Priorities and issues included in this section are interwoven
and reflected throughout all sections of the plan:

What is new?
Becoming a 501(c)(3)
501(c)(3) = tax exempt or a charitable organization
MCC will not operate as a foundation, but grants may be awarded
Structure established to support 501(c)(3) status and Cancer Plan
Need to seek grant funding and grant writing support
What will remain unchanged?
Consortium – Latin word - an association of two or more individuals,
parties, organizations, etc (or any combination of these entities) with
the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their
resources for achieving a common goal.
