 History of Alternative Break trips:

       • Chalmette, LA (Mar. „06)       • Staton Island, NY (Dec. „07)
       • Waveland, MS (Dec. „06)
       • Jacksonville Beach, FL (Mar. ‘10, ‘11, ‘12)
       • Tuscaloosa, AL (Mar. ‘12)
       • Asheville, NC (Oct. ‘12)

   Goals for the trips:
      Meaningful group service experience
      Engage in multiple communities
      Personal development
      Connect service & trip community to Tech experience
      Have fun & meet new friends!
ALTERNATIVE SERVICE BREAKS
 New student organization
 Created to continue ASB trips
  and expand upon alternative
  break opportunities
 Sustainable leadership model

 Vision to increase offering of
  alternative service break trips
  and to develop willing minds in
  servant leadership while building
  long term friendships
ASB LEADERSHIP TEAM – FORMER TRIP LEADERS

THE TRIPS – WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE
   Four Trips
     Biloxi, Mississippi: Hunger & Homelessness with
      Community Collaborations
     Concord, North Carolina: Habitat for Humanity
     Jacksonville, Florida: Habitat for Humanity
     New York / New Jersey: Hurricane Sandy Disaster
      Relief with Community Collaborations (location TBD)*
   20 volunteers on each trip
     16 student participants
     2 student leaders
     2 GT faculty/staff advisors
 Sunday, March 18 – Saturday, March 24*
 Transportation: Two 15-passenger vans/trip
  *Note: NY/NJ trip will likely be March 17 – March 25
TRIP DETAILS – BILOXI, MS
 Program Host: Community Collaborations (CC)

 Lodging: Camp Wilkes Scout Camp on the shore of the
  Bay of Biloxi - bunk beds, hiking trails, more
 Work 5 days at food banks, homeless shelters, domestic
  violence centers, soup kitchens, low income housing
 Food: 3 meals each day provided by CC

 Afternoon/Evening Activities: group reflections, visiting
  nearby areas of interest, community
  speaker, beach, more TBD
TRIP DETAILS – CONCORD, NC
 Program Host: Cabarrus County Habitat for
  Humanity http://www.habitatcabarrus.org/welcome
 Lodging: area church or YMCA

 Work 5 days on the building site 8am-4pm

 Food: Habitat provides lunch and dinner, we cook
  breakfast
 Afternoon/Evening Activities: group reflections,
  visiting nearby areas of interest (Charlotte,
  Concord, lakes, mountains), more TBD
TRIP DETAILS – JACKSONVILLE, FL
 Program Host: Beaches Habitat for Humanity
  http://www.beacheshabitat.org/
 Lodging: youth group house (close to the beach)

 Work 5 days on the building site 8am-4pm

 Food: Habitat provides meals on-site, we cook the
  rest of the our meals at the house
 Afternoon/Evening Activities: group
  reflections, visiting nearby areas of interest (Saint
  Augustine, Jacksonville), Frozen Yogurt, Dinner
  with GT Alum
TRIP DETAILS – NEW YORK / NEW JERSEY
*Details for this trip are still being worked out – all
  information is tentative
 Program Host: Community Collaborations (CC)

 Lodging: emergency evacuation shelter or church

 Work 5 days on disaster relief projects – rebuilding,
  cleanup, supporting families in need, etc.
 Food: 3 meals each day provided by CC

 Afternoon/Evening Activities: group reflections,
  visiting nearby areas of interest, community
  speaker, more TBD
COSTS AND FUNDRAISING
   Costs (included)
     Transportation
     Lodging
     Meals
     Monetary contribution to service organization
   Estimated total cost: $260 (does NOT include
    additional afternoon activities, estimated $30)
    **New York / New Jersey trip will cost more due to higher
      transportation costs
   Fundraising (individual and as a group)
       Letter writing campaign to friends and family
           Any funding raised will directly lower your trip cost
     Company sponsorship
     “Percent of profit” contribution

 Alcohol and drug free trip
 Each individual participates in fundraising for trips

  10th by 5pm to confirm participation
