1. Feeding Center @ School - feeds 253 children two nutritious meals each day
(the only school in the community that does this):
Breakfast – porridge, bread with peanut butter/jam, tea with milk, juice
Lunch – nshima, fish, vegetables, hamburger/sausage, beans and rice, eggs
2. Biblical Mentoring – Every day starts off with 15 min of group worship
songs, followed by 30 minutes of Bible/Discipleship led by their teacher.
3. Computer Lab, Medical Clinic, Sustainable Farm Business, Micro-Loans,
etc…
Currently, we have 253 students (orphans & vulnerable children) attending Lifesong
School, serving Pre-School up through Grade 7. Each year, we add a grade: Grade 8,
then Grade 9, etc. Currently, we are maxed out in classroom space and have no
ability for 8th grade class. In Dec’11 we had 74 children register for 22 open spots. It
was heart breaking to tell a caregiver (who is pleading with us) we do not have
room for their child.
2. INVITING YOU – Phase 1:
1. Expand School ($80,000) – build 4 classrooms which will be used for: 8th +
9th Grades, proper classrooms for pre-school, art/drama/music.
Children in poverty-stricken communities like Kitwe, Zambia struggle to go to
school – left to fend for themselves, many either can’t afford school uniforms,
strain to study in rundown buildings - eventually end up dropping out of school.
Without an education, these kids have little hope to break the cycle of poverty.
Some orphaned boys who don’t have access to education end up joining rebel
troops. Some girls marry early, and many wind up in abusive, exploitative
circumstances.
2. Build Residential Home/foster home – ($20,000)
Currently, our foster family lives on campus in old and leaky block rooms.
There are 5 rooms connected together, with four of our boys living there
(Martin, Haggai, David, Allen). These boys literally have nowhere to go.
They’ve been abandoned, beaten, abused, and neglected. Lifesong is the only
safety net. If we can move this foster family into a house (we already have the
land purchased), than that will also create room for 5 small vocational training
classrooms.
3. 3. Kitchen / Cafeteria ($80,000)
Current kitchen was originally built as a residential kitchen. There is not
suitable sheltered eating space or cooking space. This poses significant
problems when raining.
Better hygiene as our kids now eat sitting on the ground
Safety so our cooks (and kids) don’t have to haul 25 gallon pots full of
hot food out to porch
4. Build High School ($200,000)
(classrooms for Grades 9-12, Computer Lab, Science Lab & Vocat’l Training)
We estimate no more than 5% of current students would go on to High School,
unless Lifesong provides it! We need high school in 2.5 yrs, but construction
time will take 1.5 yrs. (Need to break ground by Winter 2012)
Educating kids through high school allows us to bring intentional
discipleship and deep Christian teaching into the lives of our kids during a
very critical time in life.
Very few of our children would have a chance to attend HS is LS did not
provide the education, as the costs are far above what out
parents/caregivers can afford = gives greater chance at success in college
& career.
*Phase 1, Campus Expansion Total: $380,000
**Phase 2, (Library, Counseling Ctr, Performing Arts, Admin Offices): $170,000
TOTAL (comprehensive renovation) = $550,000
4. Lifesong Farms – strawberry business overview
“Simply giving this person money is treating the symptoms rather than the underlying
disease and will enable him to continue with his lack of self-discipline… a better
solution would be to develop a relationship that says; We are here to walk with you
and to help you use your gifts and abilities to avoid being in this situation in the
future” ~ When Helping Hurts (Brian Fikkert)
