  • 18. The AKME culture Getting Things Done at AKME 18
  • 19.
  • 22.
  • 25.
  • 26. Stay in touch with your fellow AKME 101 classmates
  • 27. Ask your manager who you should meet and set up informational interviews with them
  • 28. Make time to spend time with colleagues – at lunch, for coffee, or after hours
  • 29. The larger your network outside of your immediate team mates, the more effective you will be and the more opportunities you will have
  • 30. Many AKME staff are on Facebook and Twitter reach out and connect through technology too
  • 31.
  • 32. Remember: email generates more email
  • 33. Think if you need to send an email – will a phone call suffice?
  • 34. Practice good email etiquette: Respect your email recipients
  • 35. Use a descriptive subject line with action required (e.g., “Please Review:…”)
  • 36. Use the “To” line for those who need to read and respond, use the “Cc” line for those for whom the email is an FYI
  • 37. BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) – Summarize your email in the first sentence or two
  • 38. If your email exchange goes back & forth 3 times, set up a meeting or phone call.
  • 39. Be responsive and pro-active:
  • 40. Respond to all emails promptly – within the same business day
  • 41. Use your Out of Office feature to indicate your availability
  • 42.
  • 43. Update your voicemail message to reflect your status and set expectations (e.g., “I’m out of the office & not checking vmail; I’ll respond to your call when I am back on Tuesday.”)
  • 44. Use your voicemail message to indicate there is a better number at which you can be reached (especially for remote staff)
  • 45. Respond to voicemail within the same business day
  • 48. Dial-into the call a few minutes early
  • 49. Take attendance and at the beginning of the meeting list who is on the line
  • 50. Give participants on the line time to respond and participate
  • 52. State your name before you comment or ask questions so others know who is speaking, “This is Jan, I had a question about…”
  • 53.
  • 55. Do you really need to schedule a meeting?
  • 56. What are the goals of the meeting or desired outcome? Make sure to have an agenda that supports them
  • 57. Who really needs to be there?
  • 58. Scheduling a meeting – just do it.
  • 59. You don’t have to ask for permission to schedule someone.
  • 60. Feel free to schedule someone in location: “[recipient’s] office”
  • 61. Remember not everyone attending your meeting will be in your same time zone, schedule accordingly
  • 63. Provide a WebEx/conference call dial-in number – odds are someone on your meeting invite will not attend in person
  • 64. Provide meeting materials in advance; bring copies to meeting
  • 65.
  • 67. Be sure to verify that people on the WebEx can hear the presenter and see the presentation
  • 68. Make sure to include remote audience members in the discussion
  • 69. Record the meeting for those who can’t attend
  • 71. Presenters should include a photo of themselves along with their introduction.
  • 72. Make sure to include remote audience members in the discussion
  • 74. Mute your line if there is background noise
  • 75. Do not multi-task while on a WebEx
