Mikke Sorensen (Grundfos) - Intrapreneurship against the current
1. You
The standing
(and very hungry)
organisation

3. ? goingnovation
…and you
How many here are….
Preparing for starting an Intrapreneurship initiative?
Seasoned within Intrapreneurship?
Entrepreneurs (past or present)?
If you are lucky enough to have an independant unit, or BU, this is probably
not for you
But stick around, maybe it’ll make sense anyway ;-)
4. The intrapreneurship toolkit
? goingnovation
This is how we imagine it to be
You have gusto
You have ideas
You have all the tools
You might be a successful Entrepreneur
You want to do your best and help the
company out!
…and of course the company will love you, you’re here to help!
6. Which hinders progress, and scares away the team
? goingnovation
Not the comfy candy heaven we hoped for…
7. ? goingnovation
And why is that?
”Most executives who seek to foster an innovative culture fail to recognize
that culture is an outgrowth of organisational structures, incentives and
precedents. A culture can’t be altered in isolation. Changing culture means
changing the organization itself and developing a story around the renewed
firm.” The Lean Enterprise, Owens et Fernandez, Wiley, 2014

8. ? goingnovation
The problem is
You’re not just innovating for the company
You’re changing the company
?
9. ? goingnovation
People fear change
And for some, the 10 scariest words in English are
”I am an intrapreneur and I am here to help”
Thanks, Ronald
?
And they will get in your way
11. But it must be combined with change management…

Often overlooked!
? goingnovation
Unfortunately we tend to overlook some steps…
We’re so eager to ”disrupt”, ”revolutionize”, and
change the world, that we get lost on the way!
13. That’s great Mr Speaker, but how are we supposed to do
that?

Understand what the organisation values highly
Sales? CSR? Cost savings? Customer insights?
New PPT formats?
Whatever the currency, deal in it.
Later on, you’ll have legitimacy to change tune
Plan everything around the short term wins
Be smart – make them stepping stones!
DO NOT take too long strides - one per month
If at all possible, involve outside organisation
Team efforts – noone left out of contributing
Communicate (ad nauseam)
…and then do it 3 x more
FOCUS
(+plan b)
14. ? goingnovation
An example is in order
GPS tracking at a container liner
Organisation doesn’t really get it – why is this important?
And why is it so expensive??
? How do you succeed in this endavour?
Shipping being a commoditized industry, cost savings are very important
Build a plan around identifying and proving cost savings benefits
Start implementing as soon as possible
Focus on cost savings in communications
15. ? goingnovation
And for all you intrapreneurs who are struggling
Remember:
What you feel when you get a curve ball from the organisation is what the
organisation feels from you – you need to change something
A failure is just a lesson learned - use it to build a stronger base
You WILL hit the boundaries of the organisation, that’s your job. Be proud that
you did so and try again.
And most importantly: get an external coach to tell you you’re not going insane
19. We’re a company that makes cast iron pumps – what do we need apps for?
How can we even make money on it? Shouldn’t we focus on the pumps?
? goingnovation
And another one…
Digitization at a pump manufacturing company
? How do you succeed in this endavour?
Pumps are still fairly high tech – but starting to become commodities
Main currency in this company is a) sales of core
products, b) innovation
Don’t disrupt the industry just yet – support sales instead
