3. ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT
• The historical review says that F.J. Cole and
Nellie B. Eates presented the first recorded
study on “bibliometrics” in 1917 in science
progress.
• Hulme was the first to use the expression
‘statistical bibliography’ in 1923.
• One of the pioneers was PRITCHARD
suggested the word ‘bibliometircs’ in 1969.
4. DEFINITION AND MEANINGS
• Bibliometrics-divided into two words
– Biblio - Latin/Greek Word – ‘Books’
– Metrics - Latin/Greek Words – ‘Measurement’.
– Bibliometrics to denote application of mathematical and statistical
methods to book. This is called as a quantitative analysis.
• According to Hawkins (1977) defined bibliometrics as “ the
application of quantitative analysis in the bibliographic references of
the body of literature”
• The British Standard Institution (1976) described the same
bibliometrics as the “application of mathematical and statistical
methods in the study of the use of documents and statistical methods
in the study of the use of documents and publication patterns.”

6. BIBLIOMETRICS LAWS
• LOTKA’S LAW(1926) author’s Productivity
• BRODFORD’S LAW(1934) scattering
• ZIPF’S LAW (1949) word frequency
7. BIBLIOMETRICS SOFTWARE
• THE BIBLIOMETRICS TOOLBOX- the bibliometrics
toolbox was first bibliometrics programmed package. It
has developed T.A.Brookes to assist bibliometricians in
preparing statistics form their down loaded data.
• DATAVIEW BIBLOMETRICS SOFTWARE FOR
ANALYSIS OF DOWNLOADED DATA- dataview is
commercial software.
• BIBEXCEL – this software is designed to assists a user
in analyzing bibliographic data, or any data of textural
nature formatted in a similar manner.
• BIBTECHMON- commercial product
8. APPLICATION OF BIBLIOMETRICS
• To study research trends and growth of knowledge.
• To estimate comprehensiveness of secondary
periodicals.
• To identify users of different subjects.
• To identify authorship trends in documents on
various subjects.
• To measure the usefulness of retrospective and
current awareness services.
9. APPLICATION OF BIBLIOMETRICS
• To identify past, present publishing trends as well
as forecast future publishing trends.
• To develop experimental models.
• To identify core periodicals in different
disciplines (through application of Bradford's law
of scattering and citation analysis)
• To formulate stacking and weeding policies.
• To initiate effective multilevel network system.
10. APPLICATION OF BIBLIOMETRICS
• To formulate collection development/ management
policy.
• To study obsolescence and dispersion of scientific
literature.
• To study productivity of institutions/ individuals and
disciplines.
• To develop norms for standardization.
• To design automated language processing for auto
indexing, auto classification and auto abstracting
11. LIMITATION OF BIBLIOMETRICS
• More formula oriented .
• Bibliometric study does not include the informal
publications and communications. Therefore, the
scientific development cannot be predicted
properly.
• The bibliometrical references, which are taken for
citation analysis study, are not always
standardized.
• this causes problem while ranking the authors on
the basis of the frequency of their getting citations.
12. LIMITATION OF BIBLIOMETRICS
• For example, the author S.R. Ranganathan has
been cited variously as Siyali Ramamrita
Ranganathan , S. Ranganathan and S. R.
Ranganathan. This may cause scattering of
citations of same person-works.
• At the same time it may also happen that there
may be more than one author under the same
name and it may be difficult to distinguish them.
13. CONCLUSION CUM ADVANTAGES
• Bibliometrics is a type of research method used in
library and information science.
• It is a quantitative study of various aspects of
literature on a topic and is used to identify the pattern
of publications authorship and secondary journal
coverage with the objective of getting an insight into
the dynamics of growth of knowledge in the areas
under consideration.
• The adoption of bibliometrics techniques in various
disciplines stimulate stunning growth of literature on
bibliometrics and its related areas.
