4. Crossovers
• What are crossovers in relation to my subject?
• A resource that can be catalogue in more than one place
• Crossover or unclassifiable?
• Are there really unclassifiable?
• How do we catalogue a crossover?
• Before technology
• With technology
5. Crossover: Historical fiction
• Conqueror series by Conn Iggulden
• Based on the life of Genghis Khan and the birth
of the Mongol empire
• Author did extensive research for the books
• Used The Secret History of the Mongols as a
reference guide
• Note at the end for fictional aspect of the story
• Could it be used as a research tool?
6. Crossover: Domestic animals
• Sections 590 to 599 are associated with the
animal kingdom
• Section 630 is associated with agriculture and yet
at 636 we find domestic animals
• Every animal that is bred by human interference
is place in this category
•
From cattle and swine to dogs and cats
• Human interference as made domestic animal a
useful art rather than part of the animal kingdom
7. Conclusion
• Cataloguing crossover was harder without the
help of technology and was dependant on the
individual libraries
• Crossovers are can be tricky to deal with and
their cataloguing may vary from one place to
the other depending on the priorities of the
Library
• The Dewey Decimal System can be confusing
when dealing with resources with dual
subjects
