In 1989, the government merged the preschool and
elementary school system for the children ages 2-11 into 3 year
cycles.
The free preschool system was estabilshed in 1971.
The quality of child care should be provided by standardised
system in 1998.
In 2001, there were 366 000 family child care providers
licensed to care for up to 939 000 children.

1990’s, Preschool teachers had to take two-years of
Post-Baccalaureate training program.
Today ECEs have to take a significantly higher level of training
To teach in Elementary Schools, licensed teachers have to pass the
National Exam.
Teachers are enrolled in a professional ECE training program for a
year.
The ECE Curriculum is approved by the Ministry of Education in
France.

Part of the National Civil Service.
Allowed to work along with the teachers at school.
They help children with their play activities, studies,
cleaning-up, toileting and indoor and outdoor activities.
They also have to work with and help the teachers in
serving nutritious food during lunch time.

It is necessary to hold an ECE diploma. ECEs are also eligible for
continuing their education.
They should know all the health, safety and legal rules and
procedures of this profession.
Should hold a teaching license, CPR, PRC and a medical clearance.
They should support and help the five domains of development in
children such as language, social, cognitive, physical and emotional develop
ments.
They should teach, encourage and get involved in children’s play
activities, learning and understand their needs.
Serve lunches to children and help tidying up.
