3. Overview of the Projects
Modelling annotations for Europeana and related projects
CC BY-SA
• Europeana V3
• HistoryPin: Simple tagging and object linking
• SEALINCmedia
• Acurator: Media annotations and moderation (assigning trust to annotations)
• DM2E
• Pundit toolset: Text and Media annotations, Linking
• PATHs project
• Semantic enrichment
• eSounds
• TunePal + TheSession: object linking
• Pundit: object and metadata annotation, object linking, media annotation, annotations
of other annotations (moderation, rating)
4. HistoryPin.org@Ev3
CC BY-SA
• A platform for people to upload historical photos and
stories, building and sharing collections of their local
history.
• EC project: Europeana V3
• Two collections from Europeana were used: WW1 and
1989
• First bi-directional flow of annotations between
HistoryPin.org and Europeana

7. Accurator
CC BY-SA
• Dutch project SEALINCmedia
• VU Amsterdam, TU Delft, CWI…
• Annotating content and annotations
• E.g. Prints about birds or monuments
• Nichesourcing: crowdsourcing annotations by experts in the
field (e.g. birdwatchers, retired historians), enabling
moderation
• Linked Data-based tools, using controlled vocabularies
(taxonomies)

CC BY-SA
• EC project Personalised Access to Cultural Heritage Spaces
• Univ. Sheffield, MDR Partners…
• Automatic enrichment from metadata to help find objects that fit
(e.g. education-focused) pathways into CH collections
• Using NLP techniques
• Linking to Wikipedia, DBpedia and specialized controlled
vocabularies
• Represent and exchange all relevant data about enrichments
• From a specific format to a more interoperable one,
compatible with the Europeana Data Model

Modelling annotations for Europeana and related projects
16. Conclusions
CC BY-SA
• Representing and exchanging annotations is relevant for
many applications in the Europeana Network
• It is still work in progress
• Web Annotation gives a good interoperable base
• Even when the core WA model will be standardized there
will still be a need for best practices in specific domains
• We are interested in what comes from this community!
