3. What is Frontpage?
• Microsoft Frontpage was designed to allow
novice users to create and edit web pages
without the knowledge of any HTML codes.
• Frontpage is an HTML editor and website
administration tool.

4. History of Frontpage
• Microsoft Frontpage’s initial outing was under the
name of Microsoft, came in with the release of the
Windows NT 4.0 server and Web server internet
information services 2.0.
• Frontpage 1.1 would run under NT 4.0 server or
workstation or on Windows 95.
• Frontpage 98, the Frontpage editor which was used
for designing web pages was a separate application
from the Frontpage.
• Explorer was used to manage website folders.
• Frontpage has been created by Microsoft Expression
Web and Sharepoint Designer, which were released
in December 2006, alongside Microsoft Office 2007.

5. Features
• It supports automatic web templates and can
create a multi-level navigation on the fly.
• It has a WYSIWYG ( What You See Is What You
Get) editor.
• Frontpage is created to hide the details of the
web pages of the HTML code from the user
making it possible to design web pages easily.

6. Salient Features
• Frontpage 2003 consists of a Split View option
to allow the user to code in Code View and
preview in Design View.
• Dynamic Web Templates ( DWT) was first
introduced in the 2003 version allowing the
users to create a single template that could be
used for all the web pages or even for the whole
website.
• Interactive buttons give users a new, easy way to
create web graphics for navigation and links,
eliminating the need for a complicated image
editing package like Adobe Photoshop.

7. Frontpage Application Window
• The Frontpage application window has many parts
like title bar, menu bar, toolbars, task pane, page
tab, work area, view bar, etc.
• Title Bar:
The title bar displays the name of the application
program, and the name of the web page you are
currently working upon on the top right hand side.
• Menu Bar:
The menu bar contains various menus that contain
various functions and commands available in
Frontpage.

• Toolbars:
They contain the buttons that give a quick access
to frequently used features of Frontpage.
• Task Pane:
The task pane contains certain commands that are
commonly used while designing a web page.

• Work Area:
This is the place where you can actually design the
web page and where you can add various graphic
and text elements.
• View Bar:
This provides a set of view buttons that allow you
to switch among various views.

10. Frontpage Views
Frontpage provides a number of views to work with
your web pages and web sites:
• Page View:
There are four different types of page views:
a. Design view: It allows you to design and edit web
pages.
b. Code View: It displays the HTML code and allows
you to edit it if required.
c. Split view: It splits the working area into two halves
horizontally, where, the upper half shows the
HTML code and the lower half shows the design of
the web pages.
d. Preview: It allows you to view the web page as it
will appear in the web browser.

11. Frontpage Views
• Folders View:
It displays the folders and files in your web site
and allows you to add, delete, move or copy
them.
• Remote Web Site View:
It allows the user to either publish the whole web
site or only selected files of it to a remote web
server or location.
• Reports View:
It allows you to analyse the the contents of your
web site by running various report queries, like
the total size of files and no. of broken
hyperlinks, etc.

12. Frontpage Views
• Navigation view:
It represents the hierarchical structure of the web
pages in the web site.
• Hyperlinks View:
It displays the no of hyperlinks available in your web
site. It shows the pages linked from a web page and
the pages linked to it.
• Task View:
It helps you maintain a “To Do” list for your website
and list out the tasks that are to be performed.
