EUCLIDES, A VISIONARY or WHAT IS THIS FILM? PEACE IS GOLDEN
Luiz Rosemberg Filho / Rô Cineasta and Sindoval Aguiar - Writer
From its more backward period to the now "modern" Brazil of today, few truly transforming
modifications have taken place in the area of knowledge. One needs but take a look at the situation
of Brazilian cinema, which has little or no space in our own country. Space which, one might add, is
occupied by Hollywood trash. And this, if we confine ourselves just to cinema when discussing a
possible construction of an idea of a nation. We would dare say that culture in Brazil continues to be
the most efficient voice for backwardness. Ideas of originality, daring and revolt remain inadmissible.
Way in the past, Euclides da Cunha perceived the origins of our backwardness, and set out in search
of a less official story. But those times of the word-as-written were others. Today, as thought and
filmed by Noilton Nunes, the times are different -- a vast world of correspondences or possible
affinities, often as intertwined as vines. Now, cinema as a place for the eye and for modern thought
coexists with time and history in a constantly renewing reflection on knowledge. And both the
reflections of Euclides and of Noilton are in tune throughout this long odyssey from the "Backlands"
to the "Lost Paradise" – regions to which neither has gained access, although for quite different
reasons.
The feature film, Peace is Golden, is an unfinished bridge spanning a process wherein one learns
about Brazil. Noilton wanted to make another film. But he made the film that was possible. And this
should be our starting point: the reality imposed by conditions of production and the dream of two
visionaries. As we all are visionaries, characters playing out our many tragedies. Survivors. Each of us
is Euclides.
Noilton the director becomes involved with the film he is making, turning it into part of his life. Years
and years of pilgrimage, which lends life to the film about Euclides, transforming it into something
very Brazilian, Produced under the same precarious conditions that mark our cinema and the artistic
and cultural aspects of our Brazil. All of which makes this film a patrimony. And its director, yet
another of its characters. We hope this important film doesn't run the risk of a short shelf life:
released with a single copy and shown at unfeasible times. Thus our cinema and its public are killed
off. The Hollywood that dominates "our" marketplace releases a film in its country of origin with over
15 thousand copies, and repeats the same type of release in our country, occupying all our film
theatres. And so our films lose their lives, aborted at birth.
Euclides' great work, "The Backlands", is confounded with his own life through his idealization of
Brazil, clad in the trappings of reality, dreams and projections. Those of a tragic universe. And not
uncommon among exceptional men like Euclides da Cunha. Stripped of the common concepts of
dialectics, Euclides did not seek syntheses. He sought out the contradictory. Thesis and antithesis, a
construction accompanied by a visionary unable to deny himself. And defined in the final scenes of
the film, dominated by a symbolism and a projection defying all limits. That which only poetry can
aspire to, projecting all the joy found in the constructing of the world. In this case, the world of
Euclides. Whose verses begin thus: " I want to throw myself, impassioned, at the sweet light of pale
evening, amid the shadows of the forests..." And ending with: And my soul, tired of the merciless
weight of grief, Sleeps silent in the lap of solitude.
It is this dialectic pertaining to Euclides -- the endeavor and the performance of his own life -- that the
film brings to us in its entirety and without any rules. And lends it the dimension of a tragedy! Would
not Euclides' life also be "Land", "Man", and "The Struggle"? Like the narration of a novel revolving
around a hero? Would his own life not be confused with his own projections – those of a world he has

dreamed of and those of a reality so precarious that it manages to confound us all. Much like today, a
time we have never managed to define.
Noilton has not made a mere film about Euclides da Cunha. He has lived Euclides. In the same way
he has lived cinema, suffered and felt it in the making of this film. Nothing could be more Brazilian.
The world continues to advance against all odds. Nothing and no one can detain it. And Euclides knew
how to narrate the epic of his time. As a professional and as a visionary. His life, synthesized in the
film, gestates that which has been missing in Brazilian cinema: fundaments for our artistic, historic
and cultural memory.
The film on Euclides da Cunha gives us a more precise dimension of our times, with its impossibility
of living and loving this country without any notion of its history – projecting, like the film's final
poem, a better world, beyond anxiety, beyond the lack of perspectives and the despair of an
unprotected solitude. This, our reality and that of Brazilian cinema, has become part of the life of
Noilton Nunes' film. As it was part and parcel of the life of Euclides. Neither a conformist, nor an
opportunist, nor a submissive bureaucrat, he struck out against slavery and in defense of the
Republic, founding a subjective reality, manifest in his life and throughout all his work, be it in
literature, the press, poetry, and the movements to turn another culture into an objective reality for
another Brazil. That which Euclides the visionary proposes, and that Brazilian cinema can never
forget, is exactly the theme Noilton Nunes emphasizes in his film – a greater dream.
Although faced with many impossibilities, lack of comprehension and the "triumphant imbecility" of a
sterile bureaucracy, Nunes made the film it was possible to make. Unfinished, incomplete, dirty,
tragic – and yet obsessed with the dream of a Euclidian cinematographic Brazilian. In other words, a
Brazil for all. Not to be confused with the current publicity campaign which pays lip service to the
slogan "Brazil, a country for all". As yet an untruth. We are not there yet. Unfortunately.

EUCLIDES, UM VISIONÁRIO ou QUE FILME É ESSE? A PAZ É DOURADA
Luiz Rosemberg Filho / Rô Cineasta e Sindoval Aguiar - Escritor
do saber.
E tanto a reflexão

cinema e o púiblico do filme nacional.
cobrindo todos os nossos cinemas. E desse modo nossos filmes perdem a vida no nascedouro;
abortados.
do mundo.
e visionário. E sua vida sintetizada no filme gestou o que nos tem faltado no cinema brasileiro;

Inacabado,
