- Note the goals for today.
- The main difference is you are providing an extra level of communication- not just text but now visual communication as well. Also, “As we learn these tools, you will discover many additional uses for them. They are not exclusive to chat, but that certainly is one use for them, especially the URL tools.”
- “Now we are going to examine two types of screencasting tools. They each have their benefits and downsides. Hopefully by the end of the session you can identify which one suits your needs the best and which one you find to be the easiest to work with. Both tools offer the ability to show your users instead of explaining solely through text.”
- Read slide. Define “Screen capture,” “screencast,” and other use- tutorials.
- Practice time-“First we are going to familiarize ourselves with the Jing menu and tools. Then we’ll play with taking a screen capture and using additional capture tools. - “Screencasting in Jing is just like capturing, except instead of capturing one screen, you can record the action happening on your screen. Again, just like with a screen capture, we are using the capture tool, and you must be on the screen you want your screencast to start one. Once you are screencasting, you can change screens.”“Press ‘record’ to begin. ‘Pause’ stops recording and allows you to resume once you’re again ready. ‘Stop’ will end the recording.”“Make a screencast on how to search your library’s catalog.”Save it and share it the same way you would with a screen capture.Hard drive or Screencast.comShare the link or embed itHave them open a new tab and paste the link to view their screencast.

- “Screencast-o-Matic is a web-based screencasting program. No downloading necessary. Like Jing, it saves your screencasts to the ‘cloud.’ It does not have a separate feature for screen captures.”

- “SOM provides you with a frame or capture size, unlike Jing where you can create you own. You will select ‘create’ to get started. The first time you create one, SOM will check your Java settings. If you don’t have Java on your computer, it will prompt you to install it. Once it is installed, you can continue with your screencast and SOM will not prompt you again for it. Next, pick the size screen you want. You will also see an option for audio. Click ‘Go!’ when you’re ready. Unlike Jing, you do not need to already be on the screen you want your screencast to begin on. Rather, SOM lets you select the screen even after you’ve selected your screen size.”“Click the ‘Record’ button to begin screencasting. ‘Pause’ allows you to stop and resume when ready. Click ‘Stop,’ then ‘Done’ when you are finished. Let’s try screencasting an EBSCOhost database search.”“Once you click ‘Done,’ the next screen will offer you a number of options. Take a look at your handout and you can see what each option offers.”Explain the options.Have them save it to SOM. Fill in information “Title, Description, Notes, etc.” Point out the link that they will need to copy and paste. Also mention the “Channel” features. Show them your channels. Then have them click on the link. Next slide shows what information is attached to the screencast.
- “When you look at your completed screencast, SOM offers some additional information.”Explain each box.

- Read slide. Take them to NPR.org, find a story they like, and shorten the link. Will have to have two tabs open.

- “On the following slides are 3 reference questions (real questions). To get some practice using these tools with chat interactions in mind, try answering them using your library’s resources, your preferred screencasting/capture program, and preferred link sharing site.”Show them the Meebochatroom. Explain how they will post their “visual communication” to the chat room. “This way you gain practice using these tools and you can take a look at how other participants are using the tools.”
