ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation
To start off, we are asked to be mayors of ‘X city’ in 2033 where some confidential
apocalypse event happened that year. For this reason, mayors were given the option
to gave our city a new hope by placing a new city either:
1.Underground
2.Underwater
3.On water
4.On air
5.Enhance the current city
With the chosen location, mayors will be asked to propose a new city through videos,
drawings and so on.
We start off by studying urban structures and management of ancient, present and
future cities. From these researches, we then begin designing the ‘X-city’. The
design, in the form of drawings, 3D modeling or annotations, should be finally
presented in the form of video.
From this project, students should be able to learn the urban structures of multiple
famous cities and also the importance of having such a structure. This general
knowledge can aid the students in their future works in the construction industry.

Apocalypse
The term originally was used as a revelation of God’s will until it was mentioned both
religiously and scientifically that the term is used to define the end of the world,
planet, time or even ourselves. For this case, we face apocalypse that is enough for
us to leave our old city.
Apocalypse can be divided into few main categories which are further divided into
sub-category.
1. Human-made apocalypse
-War

4
ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation
-Accidents (such as the case of Chernobyl)
2. Natural apocalypse
-Typhoon
-Change of axis of Earth
-Volcanic eruption
3. Invasion
-Zombie Invasion
-Alien invasion
-Plague
The proposed city should also be related to the types of apocalypse above.
I have chosen the volcanic
apocalypse because it forces
the person to live on air and
have no other alternatives
which is a perfect scenario for
this city to work.
The fact that the eruption
causes the rise of temperature
and toxic environment also mend the city of Jannah into a new design.

The City
A definition of city differs from the perspective of countries and over the centuries.
Some consider city to be a larger version of town. Some consider city to be relatively
large and permanent settlement. In Vatican City, city is a town with a cathedral. In
Britain and the commonwealth, a city is a city only when there is a royal charters
signed by a monarch.

However, In my own opinion;
‘A city is a highly-dense population with its basics needs and service provided to the
people living in it.’
What really makes a city includes these guideline.
1. Population density is high
2. Contains advance technology
3. Urban service is provided
4. Basic needs is provided
5. High sustainability
Population density of a city can be calculated by dividing the cities into area by
square miles or square meter. The amount of people approximated will be divided by
the area. Urban services include recreational park, banks, police station, post office
and so on. The most important part would be the basic needs, it is important to have
at least
water,
food and
shelter in
a city. The

city should also provide a good transportation, waste removal system and provide
electricity.
To make a city good, the city should have a control over the hygiene of the city. The
hygiene of the city can be controlled by services provided by the government such
as sewers, filtration of water supply and so on. A good city should be able to control
the rate of birth and death of a country to avoid over-population. A city should also
be able to control the migration of outsiders to avoid crimes and lack of job of the
citizen. This should be able to provide a promise of jobs availability.
A good city should also be able to create an identity for its country.

Ancient
Cities
Historian categorized world
history into three phases.
The first phase happened
5 to 6 thousand years ago
which grew into a river valley civilization. This civilization includes Mesopotamia,
Egypt, Indus, Hwang Ho and so on. During this time, the civilization mainly

depended on agriculture and domesticated animals. They also include small barter
trade until the trade grew so large the money system was required.
These civilizations continue grow over the years. One of the greatest eras of the past
is Renaissance Era and to talk about Renaissance Era, there is a need to talk about
Venice.
One of the most obvious functions in Venice’s urban planning is the separation of
public spaces and private spaces. Most of the buildings in Venice are baroque style
to show its power, wealth and skill. Normally, the center is public and commercial.
The center is where the Venetian places their sacred space and the palace. The
roads of the city radiates from the center to define the center of the city.

The city was divided into six districts:
• Cannaregro-entry point for most visitor in Venice
• San Polo- Liveliest district, here resides the market stall and small shops. The
combination of bridge and market creates an attraction. It was also used to be
commercial for banker and brokers.
• Dorsoduro
• Santa Croce
• San Marco- political and judicial center of Venice
• Castello
The districts gave me an idea of a better zoning method. It is very much easier to if
the city was divided into districts. The people of Jannah will know where to go when
problem start, when there is time to leisure and so on. The people of Jannah should
also know where public space and private space obviously.

Present Cities
The third phase begins after the great World War II. During the phase, International
trade increases rapidly. With this, countries have economical raise and more
advance technology. Since then, city such as New York grew larger as year’s pasts.
However, during the research Hiroshima caught my attention. Its condition is similar
to the city I am working on. Despite how Hiroshima suffered the devastated nuclear
explosion during the World War II, Hiroshima is one of the few most advance cities in
the world.

12
ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation
One of the few factors that make it so significant is the Memorial Park and Peace
Boulevard. This memorial not only built for the lost souls of Hiroshima during the war
but it also reminds the world how devastating a war cause. Hiroshima also uses its
landscape to produce the best Aquapolis city which attracts tourist and the citizen to
spend time there.
The government also forms an act to produce a guideline in the reconstruction of
Hiroshima. For example, Article 2 states that the government plays two parts:
enhancing transportation, sanitation, safety, economic and urban facility at the same
time protecting the cultural facility by indicating the peace of a city.
The best feature of Hiroshima is they wrote noted the location of highlights and
mentioned the size of the highlights to guide them in urban planning and
construction.

Future Cities
Future city or Smart city is a new phase that was aimed to be created by a lot of
countries such as America, South Korea, Japan and so on. Some of the city has
successfully
achieved the phase
of smart city. One
of the greatest
examples is the
Songdo of South
Korea.

ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation
The most significant part of Songdo is that it has telepresence in home, offices,
hospitals, shopping mall to make video call anytime and anywhere. The city of
Songdo also has sensors in street and building to monitor the temperature, road
condition, crime scene, street light control so they can react to problem at light speed
and increase efficiency.
The city of Songdo produced highlights to guide them in constructing the city. For
example:
• The 68-story Northeast Asia Trade Tower, which will stand as Korea's tallest building
and most advanced corporate center.
• The architecturally stunning Songdo Convensia, operating as Incheon's primary
convention center, is Korea's largest column-free interior space.
• 600 acres of open space including a 100-acre Central Park, providing a beautiful place
of refuge and relaxation for those who live and work in the city.
• The Incheon Arts Center, a cultural complex housing a concert hall, opera house,
museum of Asian contemporary art, a music conservatory, design school, artist in
residence housing, and a library.
• The Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea features an 18-hole championship golf course, a
full clubhouse and a fitness center situated on a 228 acre site which will also include
luxury villas and condominiums.
• Public and private schools including the Chadwick International School for students
kindergarten through high school, offering a state-of-the-art learning environment and
international perspectives to prepare them for leading post-secondary schools around
the world.

The “X” City
Volcanic eruption occurred globally in the year 2019. Most cities have either sunk
into the ocean due to underwater volcanic eruption or eaten by the hot lava. Kuala
Lumpur was one of the few surviving cities but by geologists’ prediction, it will not
last when Indonesia have fully sunk into the ocean. Malaysia was funded by the

United Nation to begin Operation Jannah. The city was up to the sky using 2g of
antimatter at each side of the city in 2033. Operation Jannah is a success.
The city is 40 square kilometers containing 150,000 people. The people of Jannah
consists 70% Malaysian and 30% non-malaysian. 60% of Jannah citizens are
Muslim, 16% are Christian, 5% are Hindu, 14% Buddhist, 5% are Hebrews, 3%
others and 2% without religion. The Muslims are politically dominant in the city of
Jannah. The people of Malaysia consists of the five main ethnic which are Malays,
Chinese, Indians, Iban and Kadazan-Dusun while non-malaysian consists of
Western community, Asian community, Arabians and Africans.
The city provides a lot of new job opportunity for them. People of Jannah can work
as researchers, monitor in the control center, engineer of the city, biologists for
agriculture and so on. The people need a governmental-funded international school,
basic needs and services, convention centers and so on.
The people of Jannah are controlled using Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) and everything was automatic such as street lights, air
conditioning and so on. The people of Jannah will be given the opportunity to request
change with the right reason using the telepresence for a short moment.

The Highlights of Jannah is as follows:
1. A 2.5 square kilometer of Jannah Memorial Park with 0.2 square kilometer of
lake within and a 0.15 square kilometer with a 0.2 kilometer in height of
aluminium memorial
2. 0.8 square kilometer of Jannah Convention Center directly opposite to the
aluminium memorial for reflection.
3. 0.3 square kilometer of International governmental-supported primary and
secondary school.
4. 1.0 square kilometer of Jannah Technological Research Facility include 0.05
square kilometer of science exhibition center
5. 4.5 square kilometer of Jannah International Airport with at least 6 anti-fumarole
aeroplanes.

Process
I start off with researching the definition of city and note down the basic needs of a
simple city. After finding out the basic needs and so on, I began designing the
levitating mechanism along with the method of obtaining water, removal of wastes
and electricity generation. I designed the mechanism with existing systems and
some knowledge in physics and chemistry.
Due to the fact that I have chose to make a sky-city. I went to google search for
some inspiration. One of the few that got me inspired is the space station. I also
wanted to create a similar design like Hiroshima where the people can sit in a café
and watch the river flow. So I designed the entire city to have a lung-like structure.
Finally, after learning the districts in Venice, I thought of making a district specially
for the government.
The city of Jannah is not built for fanciness due to the fact that too many high-rise
building may cause a lot of air resistance but was mainly built like a shelter for
surviving the volcanic event. The best feature of the entire city is the ICT monitoring
system. The idea of using such a system came from the city of Songdo where
everything was managed using ICT. The other best feature of Jannah is Memorial

Park. The memorial park idea comes from Hiroshima’s Memorial Park and Peace
Boulevard.
The name Jannah derives from the al-Quran text as the highest, everlasting paradise
in Heaven. The name of the city was originally ‘Paradiso’ which means paradise in
Latin. The idea came from the book Divina Commedia that was written by Dante
during the Renaissance Era. The name was supposedly given to give an impression
that the city was like a paradise to the people since the city is in the sky.
The zoning method was zoned in such a way where the residential area were placed
at the side with commercial area equally placed for the north and south part of
Jannah. The industrial area was placed to the side to ensure the people of Jannah
do not have to go near there if not involved in work.

Conclusion
From this project, I have learnt that the
most important thing is time
management. I have seen a lot of my
classmates ‘dying’ while trying to make
the video and writing report including
myself. Our lecturer, who understood
our situation, also mentioned that this
should be the greatest lesson for all of
us and hope we can remember this
lesson when we are working as architect or quantity surveyor.
I have also learnt more about urban planning by being a ‘mayor’ of the project. My
understanding towards city have increased and also understand how urban planning
works.

  • 3. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation To start off, we are asked to be mayors of ‘X city’ in 2033 where some confidential apocalypse event happened that year. For this reason, mayors were given the option to gave our city a new hope by placing a new city either: 1.Underground 2.Underwater 3.On water 4.On air 5.Enhance the current city With the chosen location, mayors will be asked to propose a new city through videos, drawings and so on. We start off by studying urban structures and management of ancient, present and future cities. From these researches, we then begin designing the ‘X-city’. The design, in the form of drawings, 3D modeling or annotations, should be finally presented in the form of video. From this project, students should be able to learn the urban structures of multiple famous cities and also the importance of having such a structure. This general knowledge can aid the students in their future works in the construction industry. Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 3
  • 4. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation Apocalypse The term originally was used as a revelation of God’s will until it was mentioned both religiously and scientifically that the term is used to define the end of the world, planet, time or even ourselves. For this case, we face apocalypse that is enough for us to leave our old city. Apocalypse can be divided into few main categories which are further divided into sub-category. 1. Human-made apocalypse -War Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 4
  • 5. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation -Accidents (such as the case of Chernobyl) 2. Natural apocalypse -Typhoon -Change of axis of Earth -Volcanic eruption 3. Invasion -Zombie Invasion -Alien invasion -Plague The proposed city should also be related to the types of apocalypse above. I have chosen the volcanic apocalypse because it forces the person to live on air and have no other alternatives which is a perfect scenario for this city to work. The fact that the eruption causes the rise of temperature and toxic environment also mend the city of Jannah into a new design. • 6. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation The City A definition of city differs from the perspective of countries and over the centuries. Some consider city to be a larger version of town. Some consider city to be relatively large and permanent settlement. In Vatican City, city is a town with a cathedral. In Britain and the commonwealth, a city is a city only when there is a royal charters signed by a monarch. Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 6
  • 7. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation However, In my own opinion; ‘A city is a highly-dense population with its basics needs and service provided to the people living in it.’ What really makes a city includes these guideline. 1. Population density is high 2. Contains advance technology 3. Urban service is provided 4. Basic needs is provided 5. High sustainability Population density of a city can be calculated by dividing the cities into area by square miles or square meter. The amount of people approximated will be divided by the area. Urban services include recreational park, banks, police station, post office and so on. The most important part would be the basic needs, it is important to have at least water, food and shelter in a city. The Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 7
  • 8. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation city should also provide a good transportation, waste removal system and provide electricity. To make a city good, the city should have a control over the hygiene of the city. The hygiene of the city can be controlled by services provided by the government such as sewers, filtration of water supply and so on. A good city should be able to control the rate of birth and death of a country to avoid over-population. A city should also be able to control the migration of outsiders to avoid crimes and lack of job of the citizen. This should be able to provide a promise of jobs availability. A good city should also be able to create an identity for its country. Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 8
  • 9. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation Ancient Cities Historian categorized world history into three phases. The first phase happened 5 to 6 thousand years ago which grew into a river valley civilization. This civilization includes Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus, Hwang Ho and so on. During this time, the civilization mainly Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 9
  • 10. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation depended on agriculture and domesticated animals. They also include small barter trade until the trade grew so large the money system was required. These civilizations continue grow over the years. One of the greatest eras of the past is Renaissance Era and to talk about Renaissance Era, there is a need to talk about Venice. One of the most obvious functions in Venice’s urban planning is the separation of public spaces and private spaces. Most of the buildings in Venice are baroque style to show its power, wealth and skill. Normally, the center is public and commercial. The center is where the Venetian places their sacred space and the palace. The roads of the city radiates from the center to define the center of the city. Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 10
  • 11. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation The city was divided into six districts: • Cannaregro-entry point for most visitor in Venice • San Polo- Liveliest district, here resides the market stall and small shops. The combination of bridge and market creates an attraction. It was also used to be commercial for banker and brokers. • Dorsoduro • Santa Croce • San Marco- political and judicial center of Venice • Castello The districts gave me an idea of a better zoning method. It is very much easier to if the city was divided into districts. The people of Jannah will know where to go when problem start, when there is time to leisure and so on. The people of Jannah should also know where public space and private space obviously. Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 11
  • 12. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation Present Cities The third phase begins after the great World War II. During the phase, International trade increases rapidly. With this, countries have economical raise and more advance technology. Since then, city such as New York grew larger as year’s pasts. However, during the research Hiroshima caught my attention. Its condition is similar to the city I am working on. Despite how Hiroshima suffered the devastated nuclear explosion during the World War II, Hiroshima is one of the few most advance cities in the world. Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 12
  • 13. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation One of the few factors that make it so significant is the Memorial Park and Peace Boulevard. This memorial not only built for the lost souls of Hiroshima during the war but it also reminds the world how devastating a war cause. Hiroshima also uses its landscape to produce the best Aquapolis city which attracts tourist and the citizen to spend time there. The government also forms an act to produce a guideline in the reconstruction of Hiroshima. For example, Article 2 states that the government plays two parts: enhancing transportation, sanitation, safety, economic and urban facility at the same time protecting the cultural facility by indicating the peace of a city. The best feature of Hiroshima is they wrote noted the location of highlights and mentioned the size of the highlights to guide them in urban planning and construction. • 14. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation Future Cities Future city or Smart city is a new phase that was aimed to be created by a lot of countries such as America, South Korea, Japan and so on. Some of the city has successfully achieved the phase of smart city. One of the greatest examples is the Songdo of South Korea. Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 14
  • 15. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation The most significant part of Songdo is that it has telepresence in home, offices, hospitals, shopping mall to make video call anytime and anywhere. The city of Songdo also has sensors in street and building to monitor the temperature, road condition, crime scene, street light control so they can react to problem at light speed and increase efficiency. The city of Songdo produced highlights to guide them in constructing the city. For example: • The 68-story Northeast Asia Trade Tower, which will stand as Korea's tallest building and most advanced corporate center. • The architecturally stunning Songdo Convensia, operating as Incheon's primary convention center, is Korea's largest column-free interior space. • 600 acres of open space including a 100-acre Central Park, providing a beautiful place of refuge and relaxation for those who live and work in the city. • The Incheon Arts Center, a cultural complex housing a concert hall, opera house, museum of Asian contemporary art, a music conservatory, design school, artist in residence housing, and a library. • The Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea features an 18-hole championship golf course, a full clubhouse and a fitness center situated on a 228 acre site which will also include luxury villas and condominiums. • Public and private schools including the Chadwick International School for students kindergarten through high school, offering a state-of-the-art learning environment and international perspectives to prepare them for leading post-secondary schools around the world. • 16. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation The “X” City Volcanic eruption occurred globally in the year 2019. Most cities have either sunk into the ocean due to underwater volcanic eruption or eaten by the hot lava. Kuala Lumpur was one of the few surviving cities but by geologists’ prediction, it will not last when Indonesia have fully sunk into the ocean. Malaysia was funded by the Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 16
  • 17. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation United Nation to begin Operation Jannah. The city was up to the sky using 2g of antimatter at each side of the city in 2033. Operation Jannah is a success. The city is 40 square kilometers containing 150,000 people. The people of Jannah consists 70% Malaysian and 30% non-malaysian. 60% of Jannah citizens are Muslim, 16% are Christian, 5% are Hindu, 14% Buddhist, 5% are Hebrews, 3% others and 2% without religion. The Muslims are politically dominant in the city of Jannah. The people of Malaysia consists of the five main ethnic which are Malays, Chinese, Indians, Iban and Kadazan-Dusun while non-malaysian consists of Western community, Asian community, Arabians and Africans. The city provides a lot of new job opportunity for them. People of Jannah can work as researchers, monitor in the control center, engineer of the city, biologists for agriculture and so on. The people need a governmental-funded international school, basic needs and services, convention centers and so on. The people of Jannah are controlled using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and everything was automatic such as street lights, air conditioning and so on. The people of Jannah will be given the opportunity to request change with the right reason using the telepresence for a short moment. • 18. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation The Highlights of Jannah is as follows: 1. A 2.5 square kilometer of Jannah Memorial Park with 0.2 square kilometer of lake within and a 0.15 square kilometer with a 0.2 kilometer in height of aluminium memorial 2. 0.8 square kilometer of Jannah Convention Center directly opposite to the aluminium memorial for reflection. 3. 0.3 square kilometer of International governmental-supported primary and secondary school. 4. 1.0 square kilometer of Jannah Technological Research Facility include 0.05 square kilometer of science exhibition center 5. 4.5 square kilometer of Jannah International Airport with at least 6 anti-fumarole aeroplanes. • 19. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation 6. 1.3 square kilometer Firdaws Control Center 7. 3 square kilometer of Dar al-salam district as governmental control with Firdaws Control Center within Process I start off with researching the definition of city and note down the basic needs of a simple city. After finding out the basic needs and so on, I began designing the levitating mechanism along with the method of obtaining water, removal of wastes and electricity generation. I designed the mechanism with existing systems and some knowledge in physics and chemistry. Due to the fact that I have chose to make a sky-city. I went to google search for some inspiration. One of the few that got me inspired is the space station. I also wanted to create a similar design like Hiroshima where the people can sit in a café and watch the river flow. So I designed the entire city to have a lung-like structure. Finally, after learning the districts in Venice, I thought of making a district specially for the government. The city of Jannah is not built for fanciness due to the fact that too many high-rise building may cause a lot of air resistance but was mainly built like a shelter for surviving the volcanic event. The best feature of the entire city is the ICT monitoring system. The idea of using such a system came from the city of Songdo where everything was managed using ICT. The other best feature of Jannah is Memorial Your Name | Your Student ID | Group d/w/n | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 19
  • 20. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation Park. The memorial park idea comes from Hiroshima’s Memorial Park and Peace Boulevard. The name Jannah derives from the al-Quran text as the highest, everlasting paradise in Heaven. The name of the city was originally ‘Paradiso’ which means paradise in Latin. The idea came from the book Divina Commedia that was written by Dante during the Renaissance Era. The name was supposedly given to give an impression that the city was like a paradise to the people since the city is in the sky. The zoning method was zoned in such a way where the residential area were placed at the side with commercial area equally placed for the north and south part of Jannah. The industrial area was placed to the side to ensure the people of Jannah do not have to go near there if not involved in work. • 24. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation Waste removal and levitation system Conclusion From this project, I have learnt that the most important thing is time management. I have seen a lot of my classmates ‘dying’ while trying to make the video and writing report including myself. Our lecturer, who understood our situation, also mentioned that this should be the greatest lesson for all of us and hope we can remember this lesson when we are working as architect or quantity surveyor. I have also learnt more about urban planning by being a ‘mayor’ of the project. My understanding towards city have increased and also understand how urban planning works.
