08:30 Registration
09:00 Chair’s Opening Remarks
David Carrington, Chair of the Inspiring Impact Programme Board
09:10 Opening Keynote: What Challenges And Opportunities Will The Sector Face Over The Next
Three Years?
Things have been changing fast in the voluntary sector with an overhaul of commissioning and reductions in
public spending, new approaches to fundraising, the arrival of social investment, the growth of social
enterprises and the emergence of the Open Data movement. How does the sector adapt to maintain and
improve its impact and to maximise its role within civil society?
Dan Corry, Chief Executive, NPC
09:30 Panel And Roundtable Discussion: What Do We Mean By Collecting “Good” Evidence?
Charities are coming under increasing pressure to prove their worth to society, but what counts as good
evidence? This panel will explore the ways of collecting and using evidence to boost your value and
improve performance.
j; How can you develop an evidence-based approach which is robust and defensible without spending a
fortune?
j; What are good standards of evidence?
j; What innovative and creative ways are there to collect evidence?
j; How do you engage stakeholders in the process?
Joe Ludlow, Impact Investment Director, Nesta Investment Management LLP
David Hounsell, Business Performance and Impact Manager, The Children’s Society
Fran Perrin, Founder and Director, The Indigo Trust
10:40 How To Gather Evidence Without Breaking The Bank
This session will explore how internal processes can be improved to facilitate better data collection:
j What are the cost-efficient ways to integrate data/evidence collection into existing processes?
j How can you develop simple tools to store and analyse data and how can you train staff to use them more
effectively?
Nicolas Ponset, Managing Partner, Aleron Third Sector Consulting
10:55 Case Study: How Clinks Collects Evidence On Criminal Justice Outcomes
Voluntary and community sector organisations are increasingly being asked to demonstrate good quality
evidence of their effectiveness:
j; How is Clinks’ ‘Improving Your Evidence’ project working to stimulate the visibility, collection and use of
evidence by criminal justice organisations?
j; How can this approach be used in other sectors, such as social care and children’s services?
Clive Martin, Director, Clinks
11:15 Morning Refreshments
11:35 Case Study: How Greenhouse Has Developed A Theory Of Change
For organisations looking to improve their services and measure their impact more effectively, developing a
theory of change is a good place to start. Greenhouse will unveil how they worked on their theory of change:
it involved looking backwards from the charity’s overall aim, to understand all the steps involved in achieving it.
This session will explore how to map out day-to-day activities that contribute to an organisation’s mission.
Graeme Duncan, Head of Development, Greenhouse
12:00 Workshops: Working Together On Measurement
In these workshops, delegates will have the opportunity to discuss how collaboration can make the sector
more effective through learning from each other, saving money on the costs of developing bespoke tools, and
building an evidence-based framework that works.
1. A Blueprint For Shared Measurement
This session will explore what we understand shared measurement to be and the benefits and challenges
associated with it. It will use the Journey to Employment framework of shared measurement to illustrate
how a shared measurement framework can work and the lessons that can be drawn for other areas.
David Pritchard, Head of Measurement and Evaluation, NPC
“
“New methods, new technology and a growing recognition of the practical value of using data – all are
combining to change the impact landscape. We can all learn from this by sharing experience and
insights to enhance the quality of our work.” David Carrington

“Commercial Opportunities:
Can your organisation offer advice and expertise to third sector practitioners specifically focussed on measuring and
demonstrating the impact of their activities? For your chance to exhibit, speak or network with charity professionals and
decision-makers at this event, please contact Julia Dawson on 020 8267 4813 or Julia.Dawson@haymarket.com.
2. Inspiring Impact: Finding The Right Measurement Tools
Impact measurement is currently hampered by the lack of a mature market for impact measurement tools.
New tools are emerging that vary in quality and usability, and work is needed to bring the most robust and
useful tools to the market. An increasing number of charities and social enterprises seek off-the-shelf tools
and systems, but lack the skills to select the right one. This workshop will explore Inspiring Impact’s
prototype online marketplace for tools.
Tim Crabbe, Chair and Director of Strategy, Substance

14:20 Panel Discussion: What Do Funders Really Want?
Funders have a critical role to play in impact practice among their grantees and investees. This session will
look at impact measurement from the eyes of the funders:
j What is the role of funders in encouraging measurement in the sector?
j How can charities successfully engage with funders about their impact measurement and reporting and
vice versa?
j How should funders consider impact measurement in their own plans and strategies?
Ceri Doyle, Acting Chief Executive and Director of Strategy, Performance and Learning, Big Lottery Fund
Nick Jenkins, Founder, Moonpig
Alison Braybrooks, Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs, UBS AG
Barbara Storch, Portfolio Director, Impetus – The Private Equity Foundation
15:05 Social Investment: Myth Versus Reality
An investor and an investee will expose the myths around social investment and discuss if it really will
transform the funding landscape. This is a unique opportunity to explore the challenges of measuring social
impact and balancing this with financial performance.
Caroline Forster and an investee, Group Investment Director, Social Investment Business Group
15:35 Afternoon Refreshments
16:00 Survival Of The Fittest
A thought-provoking talk about what charities need to do to survive in an increasingly harsh environment.
j How can charities adapt and become more agile?
j How can a greater focus on consumers help to support this approach?
j What can the third sector learn from the achievements of the consumer movement?
Richard Lloyd, Executive Director, Which?
16:20 Case Studies: How Impact Measurement Can Help You Improve What You Do
Lessons learnt from impact measurement can be applied throughout an organisation to powerful effect,
rather than seeing it only as an add-on:
j How can organisations use impact data to make changes and adjust their strategy and activities?
j What implications does an integrated approach have for planning, resource and skills?
j How can you embed a focus on impact in the culture of an organisation and build support from staff and
supporters?
