EDFI 560 Educational Technology Sarah Askins
Discovery Education Discovery Education engage students “through dynamic curricular resources like Discovery Education streaming Plus and Discovery Education Science, support teachers through customized professional development and assessment services, and ultimately improve student achievement” (Discovery Education, 2011)
In more simple terms… Discovery Education is a great website for: Free teacher resources Lesson Planning Interactive Simulations Free Math and Science Tutorials Puzzlemaking …and much more!
How can I acquire this technology? It’s easy! Just browse to www.discoveryeducation.com The main page will offer several log-in options: ,[object Object]
Students
Teachers Click on which best suits you and start using the free resources available!
How can I use this for education? Discovery Education can be used in a numerous amount of ways in any educational environment. Teachers can find lesson plans, videos, worksheet tools, simulations, and webinars for the following subject areas: English, Social Studies, Science, Math, Health, and Technology.
How can I use this in education? Students can find an abundance of tutorials, videos, and practice worksheets to aid in their learning for all subject areas.
How can I use this in education? Parents can use resources such as WebMath and Homework Help to provide their children with proper assistance and tutoring in any subject area. Parents can also download practice worksheets, flash cards, and find motivational tools to help get their children engaged in learning!
Lesson Plans
Interactive Simulations These two examples show Interactive simulations found on DiscoveryEducation.com
Bloom’s Taxonomy Students can use the interactive simulations provided online to apply knowledge to their everyday lives. For example, the weather simulation shows how thunderclouds are created, which then leads into explaining where thunderstorms come from. The greenhouse simulation shows how global warming occurs in our environment. Both of these simulations, along with others included on the website, are useful simulations that students can apply to their daily lives. Attribution: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ajc1/2061712190/
Worksheets & Puzzles
Bloom’s Taxonomy Using worksheets and puzzles provided by Discovery Education allow students to “recall information and comprehend the meaning and interpretation of instructions and problems” (Clark, 2010). Attribution: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ajc1/2061712190/ Citation: Clark, D. (1999). Bloom’s Taxonomy, retrieved 25 July 2011 from http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/bloom.html
Group Presentations & Projects
Bloom’s Taxonomy Discovery Education provides teachers with the resource to upload student presentations and projects. Teachers and students have access to other student projects that have been uploaded as well, thus allowing students to view these projects and analyze their peers’ works as well as their own ideas and products. Attribution: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ajc1/2061712190/
Why use Discovery Education.com? This resource provides great features for students, teachers, and parents alike. It is a great website recommendation that teachers can give parents to engage and motivate them in their child’s learning. Teachers can also use this website as a free resource for peer evaluations, worksheet making, and providing simulations in the classroom, all which incorporate Bloom’s Taxonomy .
Read, Write, Think “Our mission is to provide educators, parents, and afterschool professionals with access to the highest quality practices in reading and language arts instruction by offering the very best in free materials” (Read, Write, Think, 2011)
In more simple terms… This website, like Discovery Education, offers an abundance of teacher and parent resources. However, these resources are more interactive and geared towards application in the classroom.
How can I acquire this technology? Simple. Just go to www.readwritethink.org so start using the free resources provided for you.
How can I use this for education? Read Write Think offers many tools that can be used in the classroom. Teachers and students can create interactive calendars, graphic organizers, easy to read lesson plans, as well as find hundreds of interactive simulations for the students to use.
How can I use this for education? Parents can also find resources on Read Write Think such as games, activities, projects, tips & how to’s, and tools that can allow them to successfully aid in their student’s learning!
Creating Calendars
Creating Calendars One of the reasons I loved this free technological resource is because of the Calendar tool. Students and teachers can interactively create a class calendar, adding fun graphics and facts to each day of the month.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Creating calendars falls in to the application level of Bloom’s taxonomy, since the students are creating a written project with text. The calendar tool is also a great way to get students involved in the day to day functions of the classroom! The calendars can be viewed online or even printed out and passed out to the class individually! Attribution: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ajc1/2061712190
Student Interactives
Student Interactives Read Write Think has some of the best web simulations and interactive activities that I’ve seen. Organizing & Summarizing interactive: allow students to map out arguments for a persuasive essay or debate. Inquiry & Analysis interactive: students identify and create questions and then use their recorded findings to solve them.
Student Interactives There are also web interactive activities for students to aid in creating poetry, writing and publishing, and learning about language. All of these simulations are available for the student or teacher to use at any time.
Bloom’s Taxonomy By using the interactives, students can define the problem, Identify goals and objectives, and thus the synthesis level of Bloom’s taxonomy occurs. Students can apply these interactive simulations to their daily routines to create, solve, discuss, and organize their day to day activities.
