Task 4- research into music industries and institutions
1800-1900s
The fieldbecame the largestnewspaperinEurope in1853 with24 pagesincluded. Thiscansuggest
that people’sattentionspamwasupto24 pageslong. The magazine hadto offera seriesof personal
narrativesof those whotookpart in the Charge of the LightBrigade.EightfurtherIPCtitlesthatare
still thrivingtodaywere launchedinthe late 1800s. Thiscan heaviersuggestthatthe waythe
magazine Soby The File doingthisshortmagazine keepsaudiencesinterestedanthe likelihoodof
theirattentionspamwouldbe engaged.Due tohow some magazine has lastedtime/timeless
magazinesare still everlastingintermsof salesandloyal audiences.
1920s
Odhamslurchedthe newmonthlyideal Home inoppositiontoNewneshomes &gardens.Bythis
beingquite aunique type of magazine inwhichwhere the magazineofferedtoproceedinaplanto
build100,000 housesaspart of itspost warplanningmake people feel the needtobuythe magazine
as theywouldbe helpingoutothersaftertheirlossof homesduring andafterthe war.The magazine
offersa 144 page spreadwhichis a lotmore than previousyearmagazines.Thiscouldsuggesthow
people’sattentionspamhaseitherincreasedorthe costof printwascheaper.Furthermore people
may have hada lotmore to say on the matteras after the war, people mostprobablyneedasense
of community.
1930s
The firstof the USP in termsof women’smagazine- Woman’sownhadacertainaudience mindset
as the magazine wouldonlyappeal toone type of genderandgenre. The magazine wasthe firstof
itskinddue to women’srightsbackinthe 1930s where lesssothennow.The magazine wasonly2d
and offeredthe cheapestfull colourmagazineissueatthat time. The magazine alsooffered
somethingthatwasunique atthe time witha free giftwhenbuyingthe magazine. The ‘free gift’
wouldappeal tomostaudiencesastheyfeel whenthey’re buyingthe magazine, they’re getting
somethingfree outof it(despite the factthey’re buyingthe magazinetogetthe gift).Thiswould
attract a lotof attentiondue tohowthe magazine wasnot onlyincolourbut alsogave you
somethingelseoutof itonce buyingthe issue.ThisissomethingImightconsidertoinclude inmy
magazine asthe USP isveryeffectiveintermsof sales.More sales wouldmostprobably be due to
howthe magazine offersafree gift.A youngeraudiencesmaybe more interestedintobuyingthis
magazine asit has a free gift- youngeraudienceswouldoftenbypleasedtoreserve somethingback.
1940s
From the mastheadalone,woman’sweeklieswouldonlyappealtoa certaintargetaudience andbe
a weeklymagazine forwomantoconsistentlybuy.Mostwomanbuyingthe magazine wouldfeel
inclinedtobuythe magazine asit wastargetedtowardswomandirectly. The actuallycoverof the
magazine alsohadto offerwhatisknownas classicworksof art intheirownright. Thishelps
publicityincreaseasthey’re more inclinedtoatthe veryleastsee whatthismagazine hasthat’s
differenttothe others.Intermsof wordof mouth, thismagazine hascreateda lotof fussandthat
laterledontoa huge hype aroundthe magazine industryThiswouldbe somethingIwouldbe more

inclinedtoinclude inmymagazine hasitcreateda bighype inthe 1940s due to it’sclassicworkart
on the coveralone. If I was to include thisinmymagazine,Iwouldhave tocreate a online hype
throughsitesandsocial media. Due to the overall popularityof The Field, itwouldbe ideal totrya
bringout a newmusicmagazine- furthermorethe magazine inthistime periodcreatedfussatthe
time due to howdifferentitwas. If theywere tobringout a new musicmagazine,Itwouldhave to
be of similarUSPto thismagazine astheysuccessfullydidwell bythismagazine.
1960s
The 1950s offeredalotof presentational formthe musicmagazine industryasMNE startingthe first
official UKrecordchart. Music founditsway ontothe radiosand laterstartedto playsongsfrom the
UK official chartsas itwas popularat the time.Bycreatingsomethinglike thishelpedpeople know
whatwas popularat the time and whatotherpeople were listeningto. Bythe MNE startingthis,
helpedtargettypesof audiencesaswell astell the worldof populartracksat the time. The target
audience alsowasn’tasnarrowas earliermagazinesasthishelpedlookatbothgendersandfully
sussout whowouldactuallybe listeningtoacertaintypesof music.Followingonfromthat,ITV was
releasedandtheyofferedTVTimes,whichatthe time mighthave onlybeenwatchedbythose who
were of an upperclassas TV priceswere notcheapin the 1950s. A huge worry wouldhave arisen
due to televisionsbeinginalmosteveryhouseholdandhow lesspeoplecouldbuymagazines
because of this.
1960s
Thisear saw a differentmore compensative magazine industryasmostmagazinesThe actually
companyThe Fieldsawitselfinsome sortof challenge withnew more creativecompanies whichled
ontomore focusedmagazinesintermsof othermagazinestargetingmore directlyontothe section
more accurately. In1969 a focusedfootball magazine wasreleasedthreeyearsafterthe victoryof
the winin England’sworldcup.Furthermore thismagazinewouldhave mostprobablyhave been
releaseddue topopulardemand. In1963, the three magazine rivalsfoundthemselvesteamingup
togetherwhichwouldmeanthatbusinesswouldbe boomingtosuchan existent.Withthis
happening, clearlyshowsthatThe Fieldare averyopenand easybusinessintermsof new ideasto
be put on the table.Inotherwordsthe companywouldbe veryopentotryingsomethingnew i.e.a
musicmagazine.
1970s
In waysto reach evenmore people, the businesswouldhave tobranchoutfrom the UK and sell in
more places.Duringthe 70s, notjustpopularpeople wouldhave tohype the mediaforthiscompany
but people fromthe royal familywouldhave totry.By IPCwelcomingthe QueenandDuke of
Edinburghtoits KingsReachTowerHQ wouldsurelycourse some popularitytowardsthe businessso
by doingthis,increasedthe fusswiththe company.
1980s
The 1980s foundthe companyfinallybranchingoutfromthe UK and actuallygoingEuropean. The
companywouldbe goodto workwithpurelyforthisreasonas theywhere willingtotake a riskin
doingso.Furthermore, the companyhadan ideaandstuck it through until theygotitdone.By the
companydoingthis, theyactuallymanagedtogeta sell outafterjust six issuesinFrance withthe

release of Essentials. If theywhere toreleaseanew musicmagazine, itwouldhave tobe one that
was popularacrossEurope whichwouldlikelybe popularmusic(popmusic) asthey’re more likelyto
getsalesby doingthis.
1990s
In the 90s, musicmagazine NMEfounditself releasingthe veryfirstmusicmagazine online website
and had laterbecame the mostpopular site inEurope.NME had triedsomethingnew inwaysto
interesttheirtargetaudience andpushonline magazinesfurtherthenjustaphysical coyof the
issues.NMEis a veryalternative musicmagazine andislikedandboughtbynotjustpeople who
enjoy‘rock’butalsothose wholike ‘pop’.The magazine isveryunique inthatsense andalsohasa
veryvague targetaudience eachissuedwhichattractsmore people tobuythe magazine.
2000s
The newmillenniumfoundthe firstmen’sweeklymagazine ‘nutes’whichwascostinginan8 million
poundmarketinginvestment. Inthe easy2000s people where branchingouttomore online based
technology/flash-basedgames.
2010s
In thisera the TimesIncwas focusingonmore monthlymagazinesastwonew magazineswhere
launched.Thismaysuggestthatpeople have abetterattentionspamaswell asyoungeraudiences
enjoyingquite alongerread/formal.IPCalsoreleasedtheirverybestgame andrewardconnect
‘Feelgoodgames’Thisfurthersuggestthatthe companyare not affordtotry out new ideasandsuit
target audiencesandmarketsquite well.Inadditiontothat,IPC wouldbe verysuccessful intermsof
sellinganewmusicmagazine due tothe fact that they’re notaffordof takingrisksandare quite
intelligentingettingawide audiencesfortheirproducts.
Question4
Despite IPCfittingquiteasuitedrole fora new musicmagazine todawnuponthe market,Bauer has
quite anequallyoutstandinghistoryandproducts.Bauerhasover 600 magazines, over 400
digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world. Bauer is based in Germany,
which makes it quite unique for that country due to the fact that it’s written in a different
langue but in addition to that IPC reached across Europe in the late 80s. Been as Bauer has
so many magazines etc worldwide that clearly hasn’t become a problem. Bauer could be a
better company to have support a new music magazine purely because they have more
magazines and radios, furthermore they will have more knowledge into music and a better
insight into certain target audiences.
