2. Task 4b
• 1. Chosen Sub Genre for magazine:
I have chosen the sub genre Rock/Alternative, I have chosen to do this
area of the spectrum of music as it is very popular today with a large
following and would therefore have the possibility to attract a large
audience as well as have the potential to attract specific niche
markets. It also has been around since the late 1970’s and would
therefore have the possibility to interest different ages. I personally
enjoy this genre of music and believe that I would be able to
effectively create a music magazine suitable for the genre as I would
be able to identify and recreate the conventions of the genre.
3. Q Magazine
Publisher Bauer Media Group
First issue October 1986
Country United Kingdom
Language English
Founders Mark Ellen and David Hepworth
Website qthemusic.com
Q magazine is a magazine that is known for covering a variety
of different music genres, rock/alternative is one that it has
prominently featured in the magazine over the decades.
The target audience of Q magazine is young adults around
the age of 25, the founders decided to target a more mature
audience when they noticed that a majority of music magazines
during the 80’s were targeted towards teens
I hope to emulate the mature atmosphere found into my own
music magazine, as the magazine is well known and respected.
It has built an international reputation for quality
amongst fans, stars and the music industry, Q is the
UK’s number one actively-purchased music magazine.

QUOTE FROM WEBSITE “BAUER MEDIA REACHES OVER
22 MILLION UK ADULTS EVERY WEEK.
Bauer Media UK reaches over 22 million UK consumers
every week through a portfolio of world-class, multi-
platform media and entertainment brands including
heat, Kiss, Grazia, Empire, Magic and Absolute Radio. It
creates and curates entertaining media content that
audiences love whenever, wherever and however they
want through a multi-channel strategy and a focus on
product excellence and audience insight.
Closer was launched in 2002 and Britain’s first weekly
glossy, GRAZIA, was launched in 2005.
Both of these magazines brought a specific change in the
group’s regular demographic as both magazines were
designed for a female target audience.
Closer magazine was #1 on the newsstand 21 out of 25
weeks in 2012, is a celebrity gossip magazine, the target
audience is for women around the ages of 25-45 and
typically for working class women .
GRAZIA was the UK's first weekly glossy and remains the
market-leader. GRAZIA transformed the women’s
magazine market by presenting news and monthly glossy
fashion content in a weekly format. The target audience
would be for European women from the ages 25-45.
5. The Bauer Media Group Magazines
• Here are some examples of the Bauer Media Group
Magazines.
• They produce a wide variation of magazines which
appeal to different target audiences amongst the
masses.
• Here is some examples of Music magazines they
produce: Mojo, Kerrang!, Q and Shuffle. All of
which appeal to Rock music audiences.
6. Why Bauer Media Group?
• I have chosen the Bauer Media group Magazines because of they are a long
standing organisation that already has a strong presence in the Magazine
industry and thus have a respectable reputation and a recognisable Brand
which would be beneficial to be associated with
• These Publishing Group is also produces Music magazines which coincide with
my selected genre, in fact they have multiple magazines which cover
Rock/Alternative music- this shows a clear interest in this subgenre of music as
of the number of magazines they produce and also means that they have already
got a niche market associated with the genre and a reputation amongst that fan
base.
• However a weakness of me choosing this publisher is that because of the fact
that they already produce multiple magazines they may not want to or need to
take on another rock/alternative music magazine such as mine, and instead may
want to branch out to attract wider audiences. Despite this I will continue to
choose this publisher as I can explore the conventions of the magazines they
release and attempt to try something new and therefore attract a new target
audience, for example: Young women as the target audience instead of the
stereotypical older male rock fan.
