Evaluation: from reflective to deliberative practice?
Evaluation: from reflective to deliberative practice?
The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations
Systems Thinking has been an important feature in the Tavistock Institute’s research and consultancy work from the beginning in 1947. Central to our action research work with major industries in the 1950-70’s, it formed the core of theory and practice related to ‘sociotechnical systems’ work. This tradition continued within our evaluation activities from the 1980’s onward, and features in several of our current projects. These have received added impetus from the growing interest in complexity theory and its application to evaluation practice, encouraged by our involvement in activities such as the Centre for Complexity in Evaluation across the Nexus (CECAN) and the writing of an annex to the revised Magenta book (Cross-Government Evaluation Group) published on 27 March this year. This talk on Systems Thinking offers the opportunity for you to reflect with us on what we have learnt from the past, how we are currently applying this – and where systems thinking will be taking us next.

From a talk to the Workshop on Integrated Strategy on Healthy Living and Chronic Diseases, Ottawa, February 2011. Knowledge exchange is more than just a compilation or warehousing of data or information. To generate new knowledge we must infuse data with new meaning. We do this not in an additive way from single actions and data-bits, but by creating a story about the overall pattern embedded in events and data and then using that story to understand more clearly the events and data that gave rise to it.

CARE International has set itself the challenge of incorporating human rights principles into its work, in common with many of its peers in the field of global relief and development. Being an organisation primarily of practitioners, we are keen to see what this much-vaunted “rights-based approach” looks like when implemented on the ground. As an organisation, we asked ourselves what behaviours we would expect to see enacted if we were adopting a rights-based approach. This led to the development of a set of six programme principles which have been adopted globally across CARE International. These principles are to promote empowerment; work in partnership; ensure accountability and responsibility; oppose discrimination; oppose violence and to seek sustainable results. They are intentionally generic so that they can apply to the wide set of contexts in which CARE operates. By evaluating our actions against these principles, we are able to assess how we have integrated a rights-based approach into our practice. For this reason, we have used CARE’s programme principles as a way of structuring the analysis presented in this report. In 2004, CARE International UK invited CARE country offices around the world to submit examples of work which charted their attempts to incorporate a rights-based approach. This initiative specifically sought to gain insights into a number of aspects of what it means to apply “a rights lens” in practice. In particular, we wanted to: • combine learning and action to inform sharper analysis and planning; • create linkages between change agents working in rights and social justice; • bridge theoretical concepts with practice to complement and inform each other; • understand and show increased impact on poverty and social injustice; • demonstrate organisational change consistent with rights-based approaches used in projects; and • critically analyse power relations and develop strategies for building more equitable forms of power for social and economic justice and equality. This “Rights Innovations Prize” produced entries from 16 countries, from Bangladesh to Peru, each of which demonstrated a different aspect of how our practice has been modified by our understanding of rights.

Teachers’ narratives in digital storytelling : transformative learning spaces
Teachers’ narratives in digital storytelling : transformative learning spaces
Marianna Vivitsou
This presentation was shared at a colloquium sponsored by the University of Houston, Victoria on April 28, 2014 (Please read the slide notes for generally what I said in the presentation). I share my vision for the use of digital technologies in education. I refer to it as transformative, content-focused classroom technology integration. I illustrate this concept through 3 stories of practice: from teachers, a school and its district, and a college of education. Tom is a mathematics teachers who designs a lesson with ropes, video, ipads, and graphing calculators to help students learn to write an equation for a trig function. Hilly High School began a iPad learning innovation in which all students got ipads - I share how they developed their vision which included both a technology-focus and a learning-focus. Finally, I share data on preservice teachers' use of social technologies and discuss how COEs could design a set of experiences that would develop preservice teachers to be connected educators. These will show the possibilities but also many of the challenges involved in this work. In these stories, I hope that you’ll discover ways that you, as a teacher, a school leader, a teacher educator, a parent, can assist in this transformation. I end by describing "situational ingenuity" and how I see teachers as most interested in this challenging work in their classrooms and how I see it as the key to designing content-focused, technology-supported innovations in classrooms.

Raising social equity is central to professional purpose, and the language used by childcare practitioners to discuss it is pivotal in creating inclusive environments in which children can flourish. The development of respectful language can be a powerful tool for change when it validates other people’s experience. In dialogue with others, childcare practitioners can find new ways of understanding and debating inequality. In turn, the new ideas generated in dialogue may help children secure greater participation and deeper belonging. Care workers in children’s services may become more effective by being able to talk with greater courage, or ‘heart’, about equality issues. Without meaningful engagement (in other words, the true validation of others’ experience) and driven solely by professional expertise, practice is likely to continue to be seen as an add-on, dependent on goodwill and benevolence. On the one hand, tweaking the system to accommodate an increasing number of individuals with different experience may comply with imposed laws and policies. On the other, it does little to address the community’s need for a commitment to changing the core purpose of organisations. This paper explores how we might arrive at more respectful ways of working together by challenging the way people talk together about their experiences.

As faculty members, students, and alumni have indicated, even small acts can have large consequences, and many of these consequences are unpredictable. The charge given to the Definition Task Force was to expand the university’s definition of social change to provide more guidance for teaching, learning, and assessing the social change mission at Walden. To that end, the Task Force offers the following considerations. To bring about long-term solutions and promote lasting effects through the process of social change, the following features may need to be considered as appropriate to the context and purposes of each program. The features are grouped under the headings Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes, to encourage a holistic approach to preparing learners for social change. The groupings, however, are defined by soft boundaries because each feature belongs primarily to one group but may share some of the qualities of the other groups. A. Knowledge 1. Scholarship The scholar-practitioner model is particularly suited to social change because knowledge applied to real-life situations is a scholar-practitioner’s goal. In the scholarly role, the scholar-practitioner engages in active learning, critical reflection, and inquiry into rea.

Wizards are very useful for creating a good user experience. In all businesses, interactive sessions are most beneficial. To improve the user experience, wizards in Odoo provide an interactive session. For creating wizards, we can use transient models or abstract models. This gives features of a model class except the data storing. Transient and abstract models have permanent database persistence. For them, database tables are made, and the records in such tables are kept until they are specifically erased.
