- 17. How Does This Help Business? All construction done by the private sector – equipment and supplies are sourced locally for the most part. The people who own businesses and their employees are reliant on the institutions served by the networks (schools, libraries, hospitals, government) Many of the anchor institutions like hospitals are major employers within the community Businesses need to be located in communities that are appealing to the workforce and the availability of broadband at these institutions is essential CCI Systems is providing broadband services to businesses in 9 very small towns All middle mile fiber is made available to other last mile providers that want to expand their service or level of services. Increase the efficiency of financially strapped public institutions that businesses and residents have to fund More than $1 billion dollars of business a year is conduced over the State’s education and Research Network These public institutions often provide Internet access to those within the community that can’t afford it. We are conducting educational programs geared towards promoting the value of broadband Private Sector Partnerships within CAN’s?

- Historically communities developed along important waterways, then stage coach roads , railroads and highways (and other infrastructure like mills and electricity). Why? Access to markets. Where is your nearest on-ramp to the world-market via the Internet ? How many lanes does it have and what is the speed limit? Successful communities and their businesses in the next years will be those that tap into this huge potential. Successful communities will be those that bring this essential infrastructure to their community.
- Wisconsin was one of the few states that got both an infrastructure (CCI) grant and an education (SBA) grant.It’s important to note, though, that the Building Community Capacity through Broadband initiative is also heavily supported by additional donations in the form of cash or in-kind contributions by local and statewide partners.We believe it’s critical to move both pieces at the same time—it’s not just a “build it and they will come” effort, because the educational piece targets vulnerable populations—those not connected online already (that’s a stipulation of the federal grants process).
- Here’s a quick breakdown of the numbers involved in both grants.
- Chippewa Valley / Eau Claire / aka CINC (pronounced “sink”): Chippewa InterNetworking ConsortiumCINC is a pioneer in CANs in the state of Wisconsin and the nation. They’ve been doing this for 10 years with great success (note all the green lines—existing fiber). CINC has been the model for much of what we’re doing with CANs.The BCCB grant project here will dramatically increase the reach across two counties and approximately 10 communities, redefining the “Community” in CAN.There’s also another twist to the Chippewa Valley plan: wireless.
- (450 member organizations. Members include most of Wisconsin's colleges and universities, around 75 percent of the state's K12 school districts, all public library systems, the State of Wisconsin, many local and municipal governments, hospitals and several nonprofit affiliated organizations)CCI Systems, Inc. -For 55 years, CCI Systems has served the telecommunications industry and the communities where they provide broadband services, developing expertise in design, construction and maintenance of communication systems as well as the rollout of advanced optical, network and broadband services to an ever-expanding client base. CCI Systems brings to the BCCB project an essential set of skills and industry relationships that will meet the challenges of advanced broadband construction and service deployment across Wisconsin. Further, CCI Systems will provide Last Mile service from the funded infrastructure.
