TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATED CURRICULUM
DEVELOPMENT FOR THE COURSE ON INDIGENOUS
KNOWLEDGE FOR UNDER GRADUATE STUDENTS -
PROCESS AND IMPLEMENTATION

Aims and Objectives
.
The Project is aimed at :
• developing a technology based curriculum to identify, document ,
develop and disseminate a Indigenous Knowledge (IK)
• developing courseware for undergraduate students of Christ University
• developing a technology based model curriculum on Indigenous
Knowledge for other Universities and Colleges
Methodology
• Problem Genesis – Theoretical background and need
was studied
• Review of literature was carried out by internal experts
• Development of draft syllabus and curriculum
• Expert consultation was conducted with external experts
• Content development workshop for validation of
curriculum
• Technology workshop- video shoots
• Technology integration for preparation of e-book, and
Instructional materials (PPTs)
• Uploading on the website
• Access for downloading – through hyperlink
outcome
• Technology based Curriculum on Indigenous Knowledge was
developed in performing arts-Music, Dance, and Ethnobotany
• Human resource to teach content Indigenous Knowledge(IK) was
developed
• Technology based indigenous knowledge courseware for
transaction through Internet
• Transaction of Indigenous Knowledge as a credit programme for
UG classes
• Universities and colleges course to use the course, e-book
technological based pedagogical approach using power point
presentations (PPTs) to ensure students’ active participation and
to create an environment in which they will actively engage in
learning with the teacher and fellow students.
It is expected that after the completion of the course, the students will
have knowledge about IK.
Implementation
• The project was carried out in the following stages :
• Preliminary Phase – December 2011
• Review (Baseline research was carried out on concepts)
• Framing a draft syllabus and Collection and pooling of
information- January 2011
• Visits
• Identifying subject experts
• Process Phase - January – February 2011
• Consultation on Content Development Workshop involving
experts March- April 2011
• Consultation on technology Workshop involving experts –
April 2011
• Documentation Phase -May 2011
Conducting Content Related and Technology workshops entailed the following :
• Identification and Confirmation of experts: Filing of invites and confirmed letter of
participation of experts. Mailing requests and discussing topics for compatibility
• Preliminary discussion with the subject experts – December 2010
• Framing a draft syllabus and Collection and pooling of information- January 2011
• Visit s - to the ethnobotanical laboratory and institute, IAIM, Bangalore for identification of
medicinal plants and observation of extraction techniques – February 2011
• Identifying subject experts and conduction of workshop- March 2011
• Technology workshop- script writing , video shoots , editing, embedding video capsules in
power point and uploading on the website
• Shooting of relevant video capsules in dance music and in ethnobotany -April 2011
Standardization Phase – April 2011
• Validation of content, methodology and evaluative tools (
consultation with wider stakeholders was carried out)
• Finalizing the syllabus and compiling the e-book and the text
book - April 2011
Pilot- (tested on the target sample of UG Classes April 25- 30
( 30hrs)
• Conducting of workshops and evaluation
• Conduction of pilot course with target sample and feed back
assessment – April 2011
Reports and feedback and future directions by experts and
students were considered
Finalization Stage- May 2011 – e-book, instructional materials
Outcomes
Provision for continuity of Programs:
Implementation stage- June 2011 –Post Project Period
Introduction of the course on INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE to
be delivered in a semester/s

Conclusions
• “Christ University is a nurturing ground for an individual’s holistic development
to make effective contribution to the society in a dynamic environment.”
• Today the core philosophy of the institution is the social responsibility and the
holistic development.
• As a social responsibility initiative, the university runs a Centre for Social Action
(CSA).
• Centre for Social Action, is a Students’ Movement, for a Humane and Just Society
with Child as the Focus.
• It was formed, in order to coordinate social sensitization programmes targeted
at the students and also implement service programmes for the marginalized
children and their communities.
• Today there are some 3300 children, 1500 women, 600 youth in 50 rural
communities and 4 urban slums who are benefited through the CSA.
• Towards holistic development the university has a host of
programmes such as Value Education, Collaborative
programmes, student exchange programmes, Theatre in
Education (TIE), organized by Centre for Education Beyond
Curriculum (CEDBEC).
• The major objective of Centre for education Beyond Curriculum
(CEDBEC) is to enhance the quality of educational system
through creativity in educational methods.
The Course on Indigenous Knowledge- Dance, Music and
Ethnobotany is one such method.
Recommendations
• The courses could be taken onto two levels
Dance
• Level I - 40hrs content and knowledge 20 hrs skills
• Level II - 20hrs content and Knowledge 40hrs skills
Music
• Level I 40hrs content and knowledge 20 hrs skills
• Level II 20hrs content and Knowledge 40hrs skills
• 4 courses at two levels (60 hours)
Ethnobotany
Proposed Level II
• where emphasis will be in extraction of medicinal compounds from plants
• A project could be initiated where each rural household in a selected area
will be provided with a collection of medicinal plants and educated to
grow and exploit them
• Similar projects in other areas such as Ethnic food, Ethnic values and
wisdom could be taken up

  • 2. Aims and Objectives . The Project is aimed at : • developing a technology based curriculum to identify, document , develop and disseminate a Indigenous Knowledge (IK) • developing courseware for undergraduate students of Christ University • developing a technology based model curriculum on Indigenous Knowledge for other Universities and Colleges
  • 3. Methodology • Problem Genesis – Theoretical background and need was studied • Review of literature was carried out by internal experts • Development of draft syllabus and curriculum • Expert consultation was conducted with external experts • Content development workshop for validation of curriculum • Technology workshop- video shoots • Technology integration for preparation of e-book, and Instructional materials (PPTs) • Uploading on the website • Access for downloading – through hyperlink
  • 4. outcome • Technology based Curriculum on Indigenous Knowledge was developed in performing arts-Music, Dance, and Ethnobotany • Human resource to teach content Indigenous Knowledge(IK) was developed • Technology based indigenous knowledge courseware for transaction through Internet • Transaction of Indigenous Knowledge as a credit programme for UG classes • Universities and colleges course to use the course, e-book technological based pedagogical approach using power point presentations (PPTs) to ensure students’ active participation and to create an environment in which they will actively engage in learning with the teacher and fellow students. It is expected that after the completion of the course, the students will have knowledge about IK.
  • 6. • The project was carried out in the following stages : • Preliminary Phase – December 2011 • Review (Baseline research was carried out on concepts) • Framing a draft syllabus and Collection and pooling of information- January 2011 • Visits • Identifying subject experts • Process Phase - January – February 2011 • Consultation on Content Development Workshop involving experts March- April 2011 • Consultation on technology Workshop involving experts – April 2011 • Documentation Phase -May 2011
  • 7. Conducting Content Related and Technology workshops entailed the following : • Identification and Confirmation of experts: Filing of invites and confirmed letter of participation of experts. Mailing requests and discussing topics for compatibility • Preliminary discussion with the subject experts – December 2010 • Framing a draft syllabus and Collection and pooling of information- January 2011 • Visit s - to the ethnobotanical laboratory and institute, IAIM, Bangalore for identification of medicinal plants and observation of extraction techniques – February 2011 • Identifying subject experts and conduction of workshop- March 2011 • Technology workshop- script writing , video shoots , editing, embedding video capsules in power point and uploading on the website • Shooting of relevant video capsules in dance music and in ethnobotany -April 2011

Standardization Phase – April 2011 • Validation of content, methodology and evaluative tools ( consultation with wider stakeholders was carried out) • Finalizing the syllabus and compiling the e-book and the text book - April 2011 Pilot- (tested on the target sample of UG Classes April 25- 30 ( 30hrs) • Conducting of workshops and evaluation • Conduction of pilot course with target sample and feed back assessment – April 2011 Reports and feedback and future directions by experts and students were considered Finalization Stage- May 2011 – e-book, instructional materials
  • 9. Outcomes Provision for continuity of Programs: Implementation stage- June 2011 –Post Project Period Introduction of the course on INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE to be delivered in a semester/s

  • 12. • “Christ University is a nurturing ground for an individual’s holistic development to make effective contribution to the society in a dynamic environment.” • Today the core philosophy of the institution is the social responsibility and the holistic development. • As a social responsibility initiative, the university runs a Centre for Social Action (CSA). • Centre for Social Action, is a Students’ Movement, for a Humane and Just Society with Child as the Focus. • It was formed, in order to coordinate social sensitization programmes targeted at the students and also implement service programmes for the marginalized children and their communities. • Today there are some 3300 children, 1500 women, 600 youth in 50 rural communities and 4 urban slums who are benefited through the CSA.
  • 13. • Towards holistic development the university has a host of programmes such as Value Education, Collaborative programmes, student exchange programmes, Theatre in Education (TIE), organized by Centre for Education Beyond Curriculum (CEDBEC). • The major objective of Centre for education Beyond Curriculum (CEDBEC) is to enhance the quality of educational system through creativity in educational methods. The Course on Indigenous Knowledge- Dance, Music and Ethnobotany is one such method.
  • 15. • The courses could be taken onto two levels Dance • Level I - 40hrs content and knowledge 20 hrs skills • Level II - 20hrs content and Knowledge 40hrs skills Music • Level I 40hrs content and knowledge 20 hrs skills • Level II 20hrs content and Knowledge 40hrs skills • 4 courses at two levels (60 hours) Ethnobotany Proposed Level II • where emphasis will be in extraction of medicinal compounds from plants • A project could be initiated where each rural household in a selected area will be provided with a collection of medicinal plants and educated to grow and exploit them • Similar projects in other areas such as Ethnic food, Ethnic values and wisdom could be taken up
