The Federal Aviation Administration is responsible for separating air traffic in the U.S. through a network of air traffic control facilities, including Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCC), Air Traffic Control Towers (ATCT), and Flight Service Stations (FSS). ARTCCs, also known as "Centers", are ultimately responsible for separating all instrument flight rules (IFR) traffic, although they can delegate this responsibility to local ATC facilities. ATCTs, also known as "Towers", are responsible for separating aircraft using runways for takeoff and landing.
