2. Introductions
Austin Stroud – Instructional designer at the Monroe County Public
Library and adjunct faculty at Ivy Tech Community College. I teach
Library Technology and a First Year Seminar on how to be successful in
college/life in general. I have been a user of Facebook since September
2004.
Are you currently on Facebook? Regardless if you are or not, what do
you know about it? What do you think it is for?
Even some dogs are on Facebook!
3. What is Facebook?
Facebook is defined as “a social networking website intended to
connect friends, family, and business associates. It is the largest of the
networking sites” (WiseGeek, 2012).
Facebook was launched on February 4, 2004 by Harvard sophomore
Mark Zuckerberg. It originally was only open to Harvard students, but
slowly expanded to other colleges before opening to everyone (Business
Insider, 2010).
Mark (pictured to the right)
is a billionaire, and still only
28 years old.
4. What can I use Facebook for?
Connect with friends, new and old
Stay in touch with family
Entertainment (games, sharing funny pictures, etc.)
News (you can follow your favorite news outlets)
Chatting (Facebook has an instant messenger built into it)
Business (create a page for your business)
Advertising (create Facebook ads or sponsored posts)
There are a growing number of features that continue to be added
to Facebook, but this is just to name a few.
5. What do I need to get started?
A valid email address is it for the most part. You can setup a free email
account at a number of websites on the Internet, including:
gmail.com, yahoo.com, and hotmail.com.
You must be at least 13 years of age. Some kids lie about their age to
create a Facebook account (not a good idea unless closely monitored by
a parental guardian).
