2. CONNECT and COMBINE
The challenge is to use two household items of any type to
come up with a brand new sport.
I have chosen to use a pineapple and a pot as the two
household items to create a new sport called the
Pineapple Pitch
3. WHAT CONSTITUES A SPORT
Just because you say it’s a sport, doesn’t mean it is. A sport must
have certain characteristics to be deemed a sport and not a hobby,
game or social event.
Those characteristics include:
• Competition
• Rigorous, physical activity
• Effort and skill
• Risk
• Training
• Ranking system
4. THE PINEAPPLE PITCH
IS A SPORT
The Pineapple Pitch requires dexterity in eye and hand coordination.
Training is needed to strengthen the hands, wrists, triceps, biceps, and
legs. Critical to being a success at the Pineapple Pitch is having
flexibility, stamina, agility and speed.
5. OBJECT OF THE
PINEAPPLE PITCH
The object of the Pineapple Pitch is for one player to score 20 points before the
other player. The sport is played by 2 people, one called the pitch player and the
other called the catcher. The sport requires two umpires, one positioned at the goal
line and one umpire that follows the pitch player at each incremental 10 yard line.
Pineapple Pitch is played on grass, with white painted boundary lines. The catcher
position is contained within a 27 yard rectangle, with the front of the area directly
on the goal line. The pitch player begins the first pitch behind the 10 yard line,
which is 10 yards away from the goal line. The area in which the pitch player stands
totals 40 yards. Out of bounds areas are designated by white lines on the left and
right side of the rectangle spanning 36 feet wide, and at the front and back of the
entire play area spanning 67 yards long.
The catcher earns 5 points each time the pineapple is caught in the pot as it crosses
over the goal line. Each time the pitch player pitches a pineapple, he moves back
another 10 yards. The first player to reach 20 points after the first round robin, is the
winner. Three out of bounds pitches will give the catcher one point for that particular
quarter. If there is a tie, one more pitch for each player is made at the 40 yard line
until one player drops the pineapple.

8. HOW TO PLAY
PINEAPPLE PITCH
Pitch Player:
The pitch player pitches a pineapple to the catcher anywhere within the catch
play area. The pineapple must cross over the goal line. If the pineapple hits the
ground before it crosses the goal line, the catcher earns one point.
Catcher:
The catcher must catch the pineapple in the pot before it hits the ground. The
catcher can catch the pineapple using both handles of the pot or one handle, as
long as the catcher is holding on to the pot at all times and the pineapple does
not fall out of the pot. Once a pineapple is caught by the catcher, the catcher can
drop the pineapple in the drop area. The pitch player cannot pitch another
pineapple until the catcher gets back in position. The catcher stays within the
rectangle for 4 pitches of the pineapple, and after the 4 th pitch, the catcher
becomes the pitch player.
9. HOW TO PLAY
PINEAPPLE PITCH con’t.
Umpire:
The umpire supplies the pineapples to the pitch player. The umpire
makes the ruling if there is a dispute over whether the catch was a fair
catch or whether either of the players are outside the boundaries of the
play area.
Ways catcher can score points:
• Making a fair catch = 5 points
• Pitch player’s pitch not reaching the goal line = 1 point
• Pitch player pitching pineapple out-of-bounds 3 times in one quarter = 1
point
