1. WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT?
AYDAN KELLY
2. MY TARGET AUDIENCE
I wanted to target my product at a similar demographic as magazines like NME and Mojo. There isn’t much
of a correlation between age and my genre, as it transcends many generations. However it would likely be
from roughly 16-45 years old. The main feature of my targeted audience would just be a keen interest in my
genre, particularly as it is fairly specific/inclusive, more so than most, such as rock, pop or even indie rock.
As it is not only confined by the genre being rock and roll/ rock and roll-esque music, but also by the way I
have attempted to advertise it, as being very themed around British music. According to Maslow's hierarchy
of needs, My audience would likely be in the belonging category, and would generally be between the social
categories off C1 through to E.
3. HOW I REACHED THIS DECISION
From my initial questionnaire, I found out that my samples favoured genre was rock, by quite a lot.
However rock as a genre is fairly broad so realising this, I asked a question about favourite
magazines, hoping for a response that could help me define my sample’s interests in a more refined sense.
The favoured magazine was NME, pointing me in the direction of mostly British oriented indie
rock, following NME was Q, which has a similar demographic. I also felt that there are already many
magazines for indie rock as a whole, but not for my own favoured sub genre-Rock and Roll, which although
being an even more specialised market, I know from my experience it has a vast behind the scenes
audience. So to appeal to this audience seemed like a strong idea to run with.
4. DID THE TARGETED AUDIENCE CHANGE THROUGHOUT?
Not hugely, as I had a fairly strong idea of my audience before I began production. However the ways in
which I attempted to appeal to them did change as more and more I started to view it from the perspective
of an audience member, and appeal to my own interest as I myself have a keen interest in music of the
genre I was working on.
