The Japanese had a battle plan at Iwo Jima where each soldier was ordered to kill 10 Americans before committing suicide. Iwo Jima was strategically located close to Japan and was captured by the US to use as an airbase for bombing raids on the Japanese mainland. The Japanese were able to inflict heavy casualties on the Americans by fighting from an extensive system of underground tunnels and caves, making them difficult to detect. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, who was educated in the US, led the Japanese defense of Iwo Jima. After the battle, there were few Japanese survivors as many committed ritual suicide or died on kamikaze missions due to believing death in war was honorable.
