How does your media product represent particular social groups?
1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2. What is a social group? A social group can be defined as any two or more people in social interaction who share expectations and responsibilities to the group and who share a unifying characteristic or sense of purpose. The study of social groups is conducted by sociologists who analyse behaviour and interactions among people and show how these interactions shape societies.
3. Types of social group? The most broad social groups include; children, teenagers, adults and the elderly. It is probably within the teenage category that the majority of other social groups are formed. Some examples of these groups consist of; Goths, nerds, cool kids ect. These stereotypes are mainly picked up from school and will shape the way teenagers live their teenage years.
4. What social group does our media product focus on? In our media product we chose to use a teenager. This was because we were aiming our film mainly at people aged 15-19. The reason we chose to aim it at that particular age category is because we are within that age group and we knew what sort of things would attract people to it. Also, using a teenager in the media film was because we thought people would be able to familiarise with the person in the film which would therefore make it more personal so they can connect better with it.
5. How does our media product represent particular social groups? Our media product only included one teenager and therefore it only represented the teenage social group. The actor in the film came across rather quiet and depressed which would portray all teenagers as reserved and miserable in general. The way he is acting in the video links with a stereotype often given to adolescents as grumpy and unhappy. The thriller opening is about a teenage boy committing suicide because he is so depressed. The boy is dressed in school uniform and this was done deliberately because it is quite common that teenagers commit suicide from over stress from school and bullying. Overall, it was not a positive representation given to teenagers and it portrayed them in a negative way. This label is not the case for all teenagers, however it is common.
6. Evaluation I believe it was in our best interest to use a teenage social group in the thriller opening since it not only appeals to teenagers but it also can appeal to adults and the elderly. This is because adults and the elderly have all been through teenage years and know what it is like and the stress you come under from various different things. This therefore widened our audience and allowed us to appeal to more people.
