Introduction WS -> relation with Fablab\nprogramms =-> (open) design -> creating platforms designer community and business models for open design\nshow you some of the stuff we have been working on here in amsterdam\n
why design?\n- network Waag Society creative industry-> design community (artist, designers, architects)\n- design products very tangible and appealing result of the lab and an easy starting point to explain the lab\nin the beginning no tangible products to show -(documentation platform, focus on process only)> we wanted to create a good design showcase based on fablab principles\n\nNiet omdat we vinden dat design het belangrijkste resultaat is uit ons fablab, maar omdat het mensen van buitenaf aanspreekt. In tegenstelling tot innovaties zijn het tastbare producten. Het is de meest directe spin-off uit het Fablab waarmee je makkelijk mensen bereikt en het verhaal kan uitleggen.\n\n
decided to set up a contest based on Fablab principles to get\n- great designs / finished products -> function as showcase for Fablab\n- good documentation . Build an open design repository\n\nexplain contest (digital fabrication, instructions blueprint)\nalso experiment in design culture -> make derivatives\n\n
open design blueprints and instruction\neasy way to to create your own design product \nmake derivatives\n\n\nAll dutch fablabs, Creative Commons NL, Etsy, Premsela\nFrance is doing the contest, Brazil, Austria\nSome labs are starting to use the tutorial module for documentation -> spin-off\n
another spin-off...\nsome designs became very popular started selling\neven though they were open source\npicked up by traditional design culture\n
goal was to create open (fablab) design showcase-> succeeded\n\n
design company Droog contacted us. -> create platform together on downloadable design\nchange their production model (investments, distribution, time to market etc) not only digital fab also craftsmenship\n- Consumers download blueprints and make the product themselves\n- consumer buys products which still have to be made\nFablab:\nrevenue for \n- production of on demand design products\n- making facility (making as a consumer experience)\n\nUitdaging om de productie mogelijkheden, de open design gedachte en de traditionele design 'markt' te verenigen in nieuwe business modellen. \n
platform on which we can experiment with several business models\n- production of on demand design\n- DIY downloadable blueprints and instructions\n- COmmunity (open design, iterations)\n
key value for consumer: user design interface -> personalized products\nsoftware calculates fabrication file\n
perfect fit swimwear\nkey value for fabricators: use the benefits of the new technology. no stitiching needed\n
Create platforms from content, not just a model\nWS platform\n
