CFL Bank Mailer

The electric cooperatives of South Carolina wanted everyone to "Do the Light Switch." Each residential co-op
member received, by mail, two compact fluorescent light bulbs, valuable information on CFLs, and a container that
can be used as a coin bank for members to 'bank' the savings they'll realize by switching to compact fluorescent
light bulbs. In early May, approximately 1.2 million compact fluorescent light bulbs began arriving at electric
cooperative-served homes in South Carolina. Co-op members received their bulbs courtesy of their local electric

bulb to each of its 61,500 residential members free of charge. The 20-watt CFL bulb produces the same amount of
light as a 75-watt incandescent bulb, lasts 10 times longer and uses 75 percent less electricity, saving about 550
kilowatt-hours (kWh) in its lifetime, which translates to about $58 in savings. "When our members receive the free
CFL and install just the one bulb in their home, the savings from the 61,500 CFLs will amount to about 35 million
kWh or $3.5 million in energy costs over the life of the bulbs," said Don Crabbe, President/CEO.
