The enVista launch – A reflection of one of the best choreographed, intense team effort. Daily
trackers, the spirit of competition and the “never say die” attitude helped us achieve a 1000
implantations in under 2 months and is still progressing. Dr. Manfred Tetz from Berlin was the
International Speaker of EnVista’s International Speaker Tour for the 5 City Road Show from May
16-20, 2012 in India. Evening Symposiums at each city were supported by Indian Faculty. Delegates
had quality discussion with the Speakers. The symposiums attracted more than 450+ delegates across
the 5 cities. The Delhi Symposium was webcasted across North India and the Mumbai Symposium
was conducted in association with BOA.

complete synergy amongst three business units which clearly reflected our Vision to be the “Best Eye
Health Company”. Bausch + Lomb was the major sponsor of the event and had a huge participation
through a 22 mt x 5 mt stall. Surgical BU participated with 5 Live Surgeries (3 on enVista and 2 on
Crystalens) and 6 Scientific Sessions.
New Head Office
We are pleased to move into the new headquarters, which is comfortable to work out of, builds flexibility
and showcases our aspiration to be the best eye health company. The inauguration took place on the 26 th
April 2012. A multi religious worship was performed to bless the new office!!
Focus on Health
Our People Strategy is designed to provide a clear, actionable roadmap for selecting, developing,
energizing and valuing our most important asset: you, our more than 11,000 employees around the
world. The “Energize” component of the strategy focuses on motivating and engaging our employees so
we can all perform at the highest level possible. To that end, today we are announcing our new Global
Wellness Initiative called “Focus on Health.”
Over the next several months, we will introduce four new Focus on Health programs to promote a healthy
workplace, support our employees’ well-being, and help you protect your own precious gift of sight.
The first – and very important – initiative focuses on smoking/tobacco cessation. Tobacco use, including
the effects of secondhand smoke, is one of the leading preventable causes of death, and is also linked to
several diseases of the eye, including being a primary cause of Age Related Macular Degeneration, as well
as cataracts and optic nerve damage. That’s why Bausch + Lomb is pledging to become a Tobacco-Free
Workplace by January 1, 2014.
Over the next 18 months, we will be working with your local leadership to determine how this policy will
be implemented at your site. In the meantime, we want to support anyone who desires to quit using
tobacco with the resources to do so.
This global initiative was kick off by observing the World Health Organization’s “World No Tobacco Day”
on May 31, and all of our global colleagues were asked to refrain from using tobacco at all Bausch + Lomb
locations around the world for that day.
3. The second program we will be rolling out is an expansion of our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to
all global locations. EAPs – which offer resources online, by phone and in person – provide information
and support in dealing with stressful situations and everyday concerns at work or at home. The global
expansion of our EAP should be complete by this fall.
The remaining 2012 programs will be announced later in the year and include resources that will help you
improve and maintain your own eye health, and focus on fitness and healthy eating. Focus on Health is
being led by a cross-functional, cross-regional group of employees who are passionate about wellness.
The health and safety of our employees is always one of our top concerns, and given the fact we are a
healthcare company, it takes on even greater importance. With these new programs, we hope to enhance
your well-being in all aspects of your life and take another important step toward becoming a truly great
place to work.
Congratulations Harish
We would like to congratulate our Managing Director – Harish Natarajan on being the WINNER of the Asia
Pacific President’s Award for 2011 which is awarded to an individual who has shown exceptional
commitment to Bausch + Lomb, achieving excellent business results by performing over and above what is
expected.
The following citation was used during the Award presentation:
“Harish has an outstanding year while delivering sales growth in all three business units in 2011. Harish
also identified a strong local partner for the Pharma business (Micro Labs) and signed them up, recruited a
Pharma sales force of 70, put them all through detailed training. All this in only 6 months, and, in addition
had great success in Vision Care with the Youth Lens project, established iConnect, while sustaining the
number one position in Lens Care. In addition, he introduced the Stellaris Boost program which took share
from Alcon and established Bausch + Lomb as a strong player in the market, while building the connecting
rods between Surgical and Pharma through the Microproduct launch.
Harish is an innovator who sees the market in terms of opportunity, for him the glass is always half full, he
is a team player, who acts with a sense of urgency. He also built a great team in the most challenging
recruiting and retaining environment when it comes to Top Talent.”
Assessment Centre (Introduction)
Bausch + Lomb organized assessment centre in the month of March for frontline supervisors’ position.
Assessment centre was conducted to assess how closely the participants’ competencies match with those
required for the frontline supervisor’s position and to prepare their development plans.
Assessment Centre consisted of activities like Aptitude Tests, Group Activities, In-tray exercises, Case
Study Presentations, Role Play and Panel Interview, which simulated the typical activities carried out in
the role of frontline supervisors/ASMs.
The participants were assessed on CGM competency framework by our trained assessors.
4. Feedback sharing: After the assessment centre, a detailed feedback of all the participants was prepared
and shared with each participant and their counselors. On the basis of which, counselees along with their
counselors are working on their development plan.
As a result of the Assessment Centre two participants were promoted to the next level and this is what
they want to share about their experience:
P Madhu: Area Sales Manager, South (Pharma)
“I have already attended Assessment Centre in my previous company but could find the one at B+L more
interactive and engaging as it had sessions like Role Play and Group Activity. I found Business Case
challenging as it was not related to Pharma, but enjoyed moving away from the comfort zone. Other
activities had there own set of learning’s both at individual and professional front like In-Basket helped
me realize the way to prioritize and activities like Group Activity or Role Play taught me way one should
react in a group. Overall the biggest learning during the journey was to know about ones’ strengths and
weaknesses.”
Jitendra Mishra: Area Sales Manager, West (Vision Care)
“I thought Assessment Centre as two day grilling session where I will be closely monitored and assessed
by the Assessors. But the two day journey had whole lot of learning experiences. Everyone made us feel
comfortable which made the journey even more memorable. I feel the experience has made me more
responsible both on professional and personal grounds. I have strong belief for the CGM Model of B+L and
always took my CEP’s sincerely. If we adhere to CGM, consistent performance growth becomes evident in
our company."
Seven Principles for Effective Influence
Of the many principles in Dale Carnegie’s book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, here are some
simple, yet highly effective pointers for leaders who want to build relationships and influence people in
global business:
• “Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in
any language.” Learn how to pronounce people’s names accurately and remember their names,
regardless of language difficulties. For example, address them by their real name, not an
anglicized nickname. It builds immediate rapport, which is the prerequisite for influence.
• “Make the other person feel important—and do it sincerely.” Learn certain phrases in the
foreign language, such as hello, goodbye, please, thank you, would you be so kind as to …, won’t
you please, would you mind.
• “The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.” Particularly in cultures where
saving face is paramount, losing an argument can destroy rapport with the “winner.” “You can’t
win an argument,” writes Mr. Carnegie. “You can’t because if you lose it, you lose it; and if you
win it, you lose it.” Why? Because the loser will now feel inferior and will resent any further
attempts at influence. Regardless of culture, arguments are also futile because “Nine times out of
10, an argument ends with each of the contestants more firmly convinced than ever that he is
absolutely right.”…”You may be right, dead right, as you speed along in your argument; but as far
as changing another’s mind is concerned, you will probably be just as futile as if you were
wrong.”
• “Begin in a friendly way” is a timeless principle applicable to any culture, as demonstrated by
Aesop, who in one of his immortal fables wrote how the sun can make you take off your coat
more quickly than the wind. “Kindliness, the friendly approach and appreciation can make people
5. change their minds more readily than all the bluster and storming in the world,” writes Dale
Carnegie.
• “Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers.” Again, this is a timeless, international
principle, as demonstrated by the writings of Chinese sage Laotse, 25 centuries ago: “The reason
why rivers and seas receive the homage of a hundred mountain streams is that they keep below
them. Thus they are able to reign over all the mountain streams.”
• “Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.” Asking questions makes requests more
palatable, stimulates the creativity of people, gives them a feeling of importance, and saves their
pride. Say things such as, “Do you think this would work?” or “You might consider this.”
• “Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.” Here are six specific steps
recommended by Dale Carnegie:
1. Be sincere; concentrate on the benefit to the other person.
2. Know exactly what it is you want the other person to do.
3. Be empathetic. Ask yourself what it is the other person really wants.
4. Consider the benefits that person will receive from doing what you suggest.
5. Match those benefits to the other person’s wants.
6. When you make your request, put it in a form that will convey to the other person the idea
that he personally will benefit.
A leader who is seen as proficient at hearing everyone, creating team synergy, and guiding teams toward
the best outcomes is highly respected in an international environment. By earning respect in this way and
by being inclusive and using good influence skills, a leader will be heard and followed.
